    Dud Generator

Purchased a genie from Aldi today. Bloody thing won't start. Did some investigation and there is no fuel getting past the fuel tap.

Took it back and got a refund. Chinese Junk. Funny thing was when I rang the help line I happened to mention that I owned a Honda genie and the bloke questioned my sanity on buying an Aldi one.

ALDI - special buys from thurs 22 sep - hurry, limited stocks in store*

the output on them is not real stable either...

I might trust one to run dumb loads like my toaster, lights kettle and small power tools, maybe a transformer battery charger but nothing expensive or switchmode.

Dave. I know where you are coming from with cheap genies but this is an inverter job. Apart from being 10 volts less than my Honda (230v v 240v which is a negligible difference) this genie has power factor of 1, which from my understanding is as good as you can get.

That ain't no Honda EU !

Dave emailed me before purchase (he's recently bought an EU20i off us), and I agree'd with his approach ... " for $349 what have you got to loose ?" ... and I agree'd with him ... it's a far safer bet than the "Scorpion" 2 stroke nasties ... being an inverter style unit the chances of frying attached applianaces is greatly reduced, and as an "emergency need to run the battery charger" type unit for camping when it won't get used much, makes it a hard price to pass up ....

... but I did warn him re: spare parts ... what spare parts ? .... poor build quality ... his fuel tap didn't even work! .... and when it breaks (and it will) parts and service are non-existant, so you either jury rig it, or throw-it-away ... BUT, for $349 with 12months warranty, you have plenty of time to use it, and then return it if it goes south. Keep your reciept !!

Personally, I see enough of this low-end product to know better, but Dave knew the risk ... and returned for a full refund.

It's 1/4 the price of a Honda EU10i. Where these type units don't measure up is in the noise, fuel efficiency, and load carrying capacity .... every 1000w inverter I've had in the shop except the Honda EU10i will NOT start/run our 3/4Hp bench grinder. They ALL go out on overload before the grinder gets up to full speed. You have to on/off ... on/off ... on/off the grinder to stop the generator from overloading, to get the grinder up to full speed .... the EU10i carries it from a standing start to full speed with ease .... then try putting a job on the grinding wheel and see how quickly the grinder comes to a halt .... unless it's being run by the Honda.

.... You pays ya money and ya gets what ya gets!

Yep, my old ( & pretty quiet) Robin/Subaru is rated at 450 watt continuous & for the hell of it I put my 2000w angle grinder on it & it loaded up & - slowly- cranked it up.
Try that with a modern inverter type.

The Honda EU's will cope with that easily ... they comfortably can go 50% over for motor starting loads.

I have had one of those "two stroke nasties" since April 2004. It cost $99 and has performed flawlessly the whole time. I fitted a vibratory hour meter to it when new and it had done over 500 hours when I found another use for the meter. That was over three years ago. It runs my fridge and lights when at swap meets and camping, commonly for 12-14 hour sessions. Depending on load, it runs 8-10 hours on a 4.5 litre tank of fuel. It has also been used on the 240 volt outlet to power a 5/8" AEG drill, a heat gun, and after a couple of summer thunderstorm blackouts, a standard lamp and a Tv whilst awaiting the mains power to be restored.

Why would one pay from four to ten times the price just to have a Honda nameplate on something that does not do the job any better? Maybe Honda spare parts are available somewhere in the world but are they available at your local dealer? Or does he show you pictures and say "I'll get it from Melbourne/Tokyo/Bangkok for you, freight your cost"? In any case the parts will be at Honda's usual doubly outrageous prices.

The other consideration is whether repair is economically feasible. Two hours labour and a few parts at Honda prices will easily run up $300-$400.

they're not stable under load.... the frequency and voltage hunt a little, the one that I got to stick a crow on scared me.
