I have a series 3 salisbury I can measure the nut size on when I get home if there are no other replies. It should be the same, as even the series 3 sals is metric.
Hi Guys,
Been on the road for 3 weeks now, and have just pulled into Alice via the Tanami.
The rear pinion seal on the Salisbury diff went (Tdi Defender) and the oil eventually leaked out. This morning, there was a transient whine noise and I stopped. I removed the tail shaft, but though that the screw holding the hand brake drum in place would suffice - so didn't put in the tail shaft bolts again.
I set off for alice and the hand brake drum came and flew into the bush. I spent an hour looking for it, but had to give up. Is there anyone in alice with handbrake drum spare, I can buy a replacement and have it freighted to you if you have a project car that's not going, but still need your drum.
Also can anyone tell me what size the pinion diff nut is, as I'll need to remove and replace that.
Land Rover have a seal, but so far aren't sure about the size of the nut or the availability of a drum (I'm still to get there in person).
If anyone can offer a driveway where I can reassemble this, that would be appreciated. I'm travelling with wife & kids, so seeking a quick resolution to this.
Call me on 0425 867 189 if you can help, or advice on the socket size for the nut.
Thanks, Michael
(I'll try to keep an eye out on this thread with mobile internet as I go, but it's on a laptop, not a phone, so responses may not be instant.)

I went to Sutton Motors (Land Rover Dealer). They had a 2nd hand brake drum and a seal in stock, and offered to do the job right away. However when they pulled it apart, the oil flinger had fused to the pinion and the seal had scored the pinion. A new Salisbury Pinion Kit kit from Land Rover was over $500and not in stock locally. A mate in Melb will pick one up for just over $80 tomorrow and another mate will fly into Alice on Thursday with the part - this is apprently faster that a courier. In the meantime RACV has put us (5) in a 1 room unit. The taxi took over an hour to pick us up from Suttons, and a local Disco 1 driver who saw us waiting there, offered to give us a lift to our accom (not an aulro member, but part of the Landy botherhood). The taxi just arrived in time to not lose his fare.
Glad to hear everything has turned out ok Michael.

I was going to suggest Suttons but it looks as though you're already on that case. The guys there are very helpful.
As for accommodation while sitting it out, why not set yourself up in one of the backpacker hostels?
Good luck.

Suttons are good value, have used them before, good professional service. As for the taxi, when in Alice I use Alice Springs Hire cars, same service as a taxi but with a clean, modern fleet. Avoid the taxis like the plague, you don't know who's been there. As for accomodation try the Big4 they've got plenty of cabins. They've also got a pool, pedal bikes, jumping air bag thing and other diversions to preserve parental sanity.

If you are after reasonable motel accomodation I can recommend the airport Golden Chain motel as well.
Golden Chain - Airport Motel - Alice Springs
We stayed there a couple of months ago and were happy with it. They also have a secure yard out the back to park in.

Thanks for everyones advice, PMs and calls.
Just to update : When I said the 'pinion' was damaged, I should have said the 'flange.'
Suttons have had a look at the diff and it's gotten pretty hot, so that the pinion bearing is damaged. So they removed the axles, refitted the damaged flange & seal to block the hole, greased my front tail shaft for all the work it's got ahead of it, and double checked the front diff oil.
The new flange kit was ready to fly, but will now remain in Melb for me to pick up when I return.
Now to get from Alice Springs to Melb (need to be at work Monday morning), and get the diff centre out for an examination and overhaul.
Thanks again, Michael.
Michael, Ash Diffs in Carnegie do an excellent job on Rover diffs. Give them a call on your return.
Safe trip.
Pete
