The guy at Oztent heard your accent and thought it was too hard to work drp bears into the conversation.
If the edges on the black plastic bit that contact the rope are too smooth and rounded it will be less effective. The edge should bite into the rope and a nice square corner is better for that. You can make some light ones up by drilling two holes into a metal strap.

have the same things on my oz tent. they seem to work fine to me.
pull them nice and tight and they stay that way.
i find it helps if you lower the pole a little when putting the ropes up and then lengthen the pole that last little bit to get extra tension on it
