When I looked into this about 5 years ago, the COX and Greenfield were pretty much comparable. Both Australian made I believe. I recall the Greenfield had a cast deck while the Cox was steel, potentially the cast deck might be more vulnerable to damage from a big stone hit. Both great mowers but I'm not a big fan of Briggs and Stratton. Think they might now have a Honda engine option.

I also knew a mowing contractor with a cheap John Deere (LT110). He was advised not to buy it for his purposes by the dealer, however last time I saw him it had 500 hours on the clock with no problems. 500 hours is 10-20 years of domestic use.

I ended up buying an ex council 3 cylinder Kubota diesel with 2800 hours on the clock which is several lifetimes of domestic use.

My 2c worth, I have a husqvana 40" 17hp single cyl
center discharge rear catcher. Best thing i've bought
(i hate raking grass), Tractor & slasher as well
the husky is now 4ys old never missed a beat.

Can only comment from direct experience, but from an engineering background this would have to be the best designed mower I have come across. Almost zero turn, front floating deck, does a very good job. Be aware that Husqvarna are made in the U.S and Sweden, go the Swedish. Thanks to Brian I have just found out that the rider of this mower is telling me that she still has the ability to use a long bow.

For our rocky block that I have very little motivation to mow... I found the old greenfield was just plain annoying (cutting into fishing time) so now I just let the neighbours horses at it.

The ex racing nag "Spud" was the best, he ate everything from guinea grass and grader grass to friggen weeds. These new fangled ponies are a little more pretentious and need to get hungry before they tough up for the weeds but I am patient.

Grass is short - neighbours are happy

Bloody beautiful. (just gotta dodge the odd horsey apple)

I just had a Kubota diesel reconditioned (for a client), the engine builder reused as much as possible to save costs and the bill still came to $5800 for a ****y little Bobcat engine, parts are non-existent, you see the spares salesmans eyes light up when you mention parts for Kubota, then he has a good laugh when he tells you a) he doesnt have the parts, or b) you will need to take out a second mortgage. Throw away engines, Regards Frank.

I have a Husky...42" fabricated deck, 22HP V Twin with diff lock. A good mower but doesn't like long grass. But better than a JD in my opinion.

Had a Greenfield before that, same motor and with diff lock. Great mower, would have another in an instant but couldn't afford a new one. Kubotas are a monster price too.

My view.......Husky, JD etc for "lawn" Greenfield or Cox for "grass"

My neighbour has had one of these for twenty years and still going strong with no major issues.

For a relatively small sloping block I'd stay away from hydrostatic unless you get one with a diff lock, but then you're going to pay for it. Auto drive or the cone disc drive, solid rear axle are the way to go for simplicity.

If you want a bulletproof small mower that climbs and you are cashed up - Grillo. Otherwise Cox, Rover, Greenfield.
