    Discovering my TD5

Hi Rovers, I am new to the TD5 game and have not been an owner for some years, previously had old 3.5 V8 RRs over many years. I have finally purchased a 2004 TD5 Classic Discovery. I really like it, but, I am now beginning to understand the TD5 engine and could do with a bit of reassuring ha ha! I cant believe they designed an engine where you cant service the cylinder head or block, that is taking unitisation to a new extreme surely. I just changed the synthetic oil, what complete fool put the oil filter in the hidden valley right beside the hot exhaust, that is absolutely ridiculous and I am thinking of designing a remote mount for the element, surely some intelligent person has all ready done that. The rest is pretty standard, although, starter motor, alternator and water pump are hard to see!! Correct me if i am wrong, maybe I am a tad ol school and should have gone for the isuzu eh ??

Hi mate, Its good to hear you bough a TD5 and the Disco is a fantastic car to drive, 04 the last year of the D2. The TD5 is a great engine, solid, quite and reliable bar a few problems which are easy fixes.

Look out for the injector harness, and the injector seals as they are a wearable part that can cause a bother, but all in all enjoy.
Want to get more power out of it get a Davis Chip installed the boy at M R Automotive in Kipper Ring here in Brisbane can get it done. Also a 2.5 Exhaust will give it more grunt to.

NOTHING wrong with the pair of oil filters,I asume you changed BOTH
I actually have found my TD5 VERY EASY to work on
Why cant you service the head or block???? I changed my head gasket when it started to leak,no machining needed.
Chip the thing and put a big intercooler in and release the beast within
Mine puts out heaps more grunt than a V8,and retains its economy as long as I dont thrash her

Yeah, I thought the same when I bought my 2004 TD5 110, but you will come to love that engine. I first thought 'what idiot put the oil filter there' , I actually could not find the oil filter at all , I had to ring the previous owner to ask where it was , He told me there were two filters . Duh

That Rotor filter is a masterstroke of genius, I could not believe it when I took the sump off, it was surgically clean, Any Toyota Ive had, had to be desludged.

Also the Timing chain is a blessing, no more timing belt changes,

And the Power (chipped) its more grunt than any V8 Landy I had, and the economy is as good as my wifes Barina .

A few idiosyncrasies sure, but Simply brilliant.

Also check the thread here on Rebuilding a TD5 for some more insight.

Thanks Gents, I have allready started polishing the little turbo compressor with a bit of autosol, so the TD5 must be growing on me !! I will investigate the chip at a later (financial) date. Both oil filters changed, refreshing to see a small glacial filter in addition to the screw on element. starting fresh with Castrol products, using EDGE Fully synthetic, 0W-40 as reccomended by Castrol technical rep. Reference to cylinder head and block was, not being able to plane the head, and re-sleeeve / bore the block etc.
correct me if I am wrong. Cheers.

    You're wrong

Heads can be skimmed upto about 7 or 8 thou although LR say they cant, plenty have been done with no issues.

+20 thou pistons are available (genuine original equipment manufacturer parts ) and the blocks can be sleeved if you wished (until the 20thou pistons came on the market that was the only option)

In my opinion 0w40 is too thin aswell. (the 0 part that is)
