anyone taken on repowering a series vehicle with a td5?
and if so did it pass engineering?

Then you could always just drive the defender, unless you bought a rolled one
Not quite the point gentleman. Not trying to make a defender look like a series.
Someone may have a very original series with one of those icky Holden motors in it and they want to swap it out for something to make it good for touring with. Isuzu is not desired as they have one of those already. Plenty of tdi200 & 300.
So. Anyone thought of putting a Td5 in a series, and could it get engineered?

There is no reason I can see that it couldnt be engineered Dave.
You may have to put a later front on as the engine is longer (it would be very tight with the std front) from a packaging point of view, and it would be a handful in 2wd, but I cant see any reason whey it couldnt be engineered.
Brakes may need some upgrading, I would think at least to the 11" drums on the front if not already fitted.
You would need to keep any emissions control stuff that was fitted in the car that the engine was removed from, so an earlier td5 without catalyst and water cooled egr etc would be easier.
I think it would be a fantastic project, but bear in mind that the td5 even in std form is far more powerful than the v8 that was fitted in the stage 1
Would you also fit the r380 / lt230?

and the series gearbox will simply convert it self to so many metal filings trying to deal with it...
adding the R380 to suit means a major overhaul of the bodywork adding the lt230 means you need to upgrade the front axle to CV's to handle being live and driven all the time....
and you need to upgrade the brakes...
and shift the handbrake setup...
and add the high pressure fuel lines
most importantly..
its a series, with lucas electrics, and you want to add a computer in there?
(ok yes achieveable but a tdi something is a much easier option.

I think blknight said it all. With some shoehorning you will be able to fit it into the engine bay, but apart from the mating-to-gear box problems you will have to deal with all the ECU-stuff, which to me seems the major draw back. IMHO it's not an impossible task, but most certainly not a straight forward drop-in conversion.
