Not as plentiful as they used to be that's for sure, but 90% of them are completely rusted out when they become banger racers, it's just not financially viable to fix them up in the UK. I have friends who competed in banger & stock car racing back home and most of the cars they used had been brought in to their scrapyard. Certainly some of the usable parts are sold off to keep other classics on the road. The difference of course is that these cars are worth next to nothing in the UK, whereas here they'd still be worth something so despite it looking pretty harsh, the likelihood is they'd only be crushed anyway.
I know last year though there was a spate of thefts of restored old Granadas & Jags that later turned up as bangers, which was a little more annoying.
