KD, you and me both. I'm going for the P38 Rangie HSE.
Hi guys,
I am after a V8 4x4 that is capable off-road. Preferably on LPG, as the new truck will be my daily driver, as well as my weekend toy. Budget is around 8-10K.
I have driven a few different 4x4's the last few years and am fed up with tractor-like handling on-road (especially on long trips) as a compromise for off-road capability.
I have been looking at both Disco's and Rangies for some time now as possible contenders, but having never owned or worked on a Land Rover, I thought it would be best to ask those with some wisdom.
It would be great to hear anything and everything people have to say about these two machines. Please convince me!
Cheers.

Hi I had a mid 80s RR 3.5 with a C4 Auto spent twice what I paid for it keeping it cool and going and after heaps it wouldn't pull my 17' caravan..now have a 12/96 3.9 disco 5spd And love it, it will off road in the stinking heat all day with air con on and the temp doesn't move off normal, pulls the van no probs, usual problems, electric windows, central locking, and a fire wall water leak/leaks, all sorted with a little effort ...Go the Disco ..Gary
Good choice Craig. Super comfortable and very capable in stock form off road. Don't think you will be disappointed. Not to say that there is anything wrong with the Disco. Try a few examples of both first. Then see where that takes you. I did and ended up with a P38 HSE. I've now moved on to L322 TD6.

Thanks for the input fellas.
Have been looking at a few Disco's today online. Are they reliable trucks?
Also, i noticed that many of the better looking ones seem to already have a 2" lift. Does anyone out there know how much a Disco can be raised before brake lines need to be modified? What is the normal procedure here?
Lastly, what size all-terrain/mud tyres can comfortably be fitted without clearance issues?
Cheers.
I have a 98 Disco 1 V8 and love it. Reliable and comfortable. Having said that I would buy a Range Rover Classic only because they look great.LPG good idea as they chew through the juice.
I would buy about a 92 model, just prior to the "soft dash" version. Hard to get a good one now as they are 20 years old. But they do pop up.
But that's me, everyone has their preference.
Be quick, I saw this on ebay... it's got the Thor enginge (read: the better one, which will also have uprated diff splines etc) and it's at a great price with very low K's.
I don't know the car personally, but it looks good...
RANGE ROVER 1999 4.6 HSE ONLY 126000 KMS. EXCELLENT CONDITION | eBay
Must say, I have had a Def 130, Disco 2 and now a P38. The P38 oozes class and I (also the wife) love it! my favourite by far! (also great off road... I don't do extreme or anything like that, just dirt roads through national parks etc)
Thanks for all the replies guys.
biggin - is that 31"s with or without the 2" spring lift?
What is the standard tyre size for Disco's? Is a 31" much bigger?
Can a body lift be done on a Disco as well as a 2" spring lift without extending brake lines?
What are your thoughts on TDi vs LPG V8? From what I've gathered so far, both seem to be about the same cost to run, but the TDi is a bit more expensive to buy?
Cheers,
KD.
50mm lift affects nothing on a D2, its only when you go over 265/75 x 16 tyres that you get tyre rubbing. I have 50mm lift and use 245/70x16 khumo muddies and they initially rubbed the insides of the guards on full lock 235/70x16 is standard tyre size on 7J rim
