Thats great, I really think that Kombi drivers and LR drivers are similar, they are another unique vehicle that you need to have a passion for. My dad used to drive these before the likes of Hi-Aces and Mazda Bongo vans (what a name). I can remember him winding the Kombi out of the driveway on a cold winter morning on the starter motor, then letting it roll down the road and clutch starting it. The first ones he had were 6 volt and he was an RAAF qualified diesel mechanic and he reckoned that there wasn't enough voltage for the spark when the starter motor was cranking. Clutch starting solved that dilemna.
Kombie drivers wave at each other like we do and they are an underrated vehicle like an LR. The amount of time the Disco has easily accomplished an obstacle competently in comfort and people say "wow they are exceptional aren't they" has to be seen to be believed.

But then I am biased.

I don't doubt for a minute that some so called touring 4x4's would have more issues on that trip than a kombi.

They are very underrated for that sort of terrain IME. We took our 67 splittie into some pretty average places when I was a kid.

Yeh pretty amazing what they will cope with...

..but I am guilty of being one that underestimated their ability.

Aircooled, lightweight, lots of clearance with 16" rims, awesome traction with trans and engine over rear, LSD superdiff equipped there isn't much a Pobjoy powered (Like that Blue Highlight in the vid, Read torquey and very powerful) 70's kombi couldn't do.

They deserve a lot more respect than they get I reckon.

Was that blue one even 4wd, it seemed to have different front and rear tyres.

My boss at work has an R36 Passat, AWD Turbo etc. He hates the fact that I call it the Dak Dak.

The blue one is not 4wd - I don't think there was a 4wd in that model. The later whiote one could be a Synchro but it also looks 2wd.

Nice vid... did notice one of my pet peeves though. Putting logs into muddy rutted tracks.
No one ever removed them after sinking them.
Buy a winch - use it. Heaps cheaper than tyres out in the boonies.

I think the white one was a synchro, looked like hub/ axle nuts on the front.

Blue one was I suspect running a Superdiff (Strengthened and LSD) and a grunty engine, 2wd is not a hindrance to a vehicle like this
Add a highmount 8274 and nothing much will stop it.
there is heaps of performance gear available, we recently fitted an 1850 big bore motor to a splittie and can it climb hills now...:0
