Yes.

They were pretty capable when lifted a few inches and had gobs of wheel travel.
The worst part was a lack of gearing with the stock 3 speed gearbox.
A T98a gearbox with a 6.something:1 granny first gear fixed that, and it's what dear old Dad installed straight out of one of the full size Jeep trucks.

I have some of Dad's old Super 8 film here somewhere rockhopping out the back of Menai in ours in about '76 and i think there's still footage of an FJ40 that was accompanying us having real trouble and nearly going over on the same steps.

Dad could take it pretty much anywhere my uncle took his modified Series III, although I think Dad got sick of throwing the rear bumper bar in the back when it got ripped off on another sandstone ledge.

In 1976 we came up behind two of these jeeps each towing a tandem trailer out of Wonnangatta:eek:. We had no option for an hour or so but to wait till they got to a section we could manouver past ( it was a 1st low section back then in the Landie).
Whilst I thought the owners were not the smartest- they fairly punished those wagoneers way beyond what a L/R of the day could take ( think axles in particular) and if there was a non Landrover vehicle I respect as much, it would be some model Jeeps -of the 60's & 70's though;)

My old Bronco would leave 'em all for dead, Regards Frank.

Yes the early seventies bronco was good.
351 V8, Auto, coil I beam up front and long travel leaf on the rear, disc on front, light weight fibre glass top, Aircon,power steer, good transfercase and ground clearence etc
The early bronco was in most ways a match for a Classic RR but I do remember on a wet hard road that short wheel base, low geared steering with plenty of poke would end up with the vehicle pointing the wrong way when pushed hard.

It did make it to the tip, just without me. I can't remember what the other vehicles that went as well were though.

Yeh Ron, spot on with the spinning around, mine was an 81 model V8 Auto, traction Lock diffs front and rear and I had 12" wide muddies, coming off Northen rd. into Castle Hill rd. one wet night, done a complete 360, happened so fast didn't have time to panic, made out to the Missus that I had done it on purpose, **** myself.
Extremely capable off road, had a 200lt. LPG tank in the rear and still had enough room for all my camping gear, wish I still had it, Regards Frank.

While in Zimbabwe we had the pleasure of driving in a huge WWII MAN 6 wheel drive open top wagon, massive open knuckle diffs and tons of ground clearance, got a photo somewhere but literally as i took the photo i started coming down with malaria so i only got one from the front.
