    Celtoid,
I went to Aldi and bought the cheapest whitening toothpaste I could find. This type has a mild abrasive (actually I think all toothpaste has some abrasive element but this has a little more) then used my cheap $20 chinese electric buffer.

    I used the whole tube.

As mentioned it will clean up the fine scratches but takes some perseverance. If nothing else your window will smell nice.
I believe the professionals will charge between $100 and $200 for a better job, then of course you might drop the gas bottle whilst unloading the roof rack and.........insurance claim

Have you tried plain car cut and polish? We use it to remove scratches from caravan windows (which are perspex) but I also have used it to remove nasty water marks from a car window (that I was told when I bought it that they could never get them off) and it worked a treat..
