    Speedway OOPS

    A workmate races a Supermodified,basically an old fashioned Sprintcar.Its a reasonably cheap way to go racing.
    Mud goes pretty well,he got a first,second and third in the heats,watch him in action in the main

    What are the rules /specifications for that class, Andrew? They look like the sort of doggy "Super Modifieds" that descended from "Hot Rods" and "Stock Cars" in the 1960's. What engines are in use? What is the track diameter?

    Super Mods got pretty classy for a short time until displaced in popularity by true sprint cars. Current Sprint Cars (and midgets) are pretty high tech and you need to be rich or have a rich sponsor to have a sprinter that is successful in open company.

    I have an open cockpit sprint car from the late sixties/early seventies. Restoration is stalled until I make a couple of decisions as to what I am going to do with it, and decide what engine to go into it.

    I am torn between restoring it as a sprint car for historic speedway but these do not race, only demonstration runs because of insurance restrictions, or making it into a road racer for the short track autosportsman sprint series. The guy I got it from was halfway through doing the latter option. He kept the iron Chevy (600 hp) for one of his others.

    The chassis has been centralised (the offset taken out), wheels down to 10" front and 12" rear and no stagger, and a clutch and Toyota three speed box fitted. I was hoping to find a big Offy whilst in the USA last year and am still fishing for one. I found one, a 255, at Zakira's Garage with an extra crankcase breather where No1 leg got out of bed. This is being repaired and a mate is buying it for a Miller replica. Stewart van Dyne has another, a 270, that needs another block. The brand new repro block busted on the dyno and there is a dispute between Stewart and the maker of the block. This may take a while.

    Real motor racing has dirt, lights, methanol, and Offenhausers!!

    Hi Brian
    Dont know alot about them.
    They are modled on old styled Sprint Cars.
    They run V8s,up to a Holden 308 V8 which is fairly stock.
    No gearbox,just a dog clutch.They do run staggered rear tyres but dont allow racing tyres to keep the racing even/cheap.
    Try a google,WA Super Mod Assn is thier club.

    Can't find a web site for them. May be my lack of search skills. The speedway sites I could find have virtually no information other than dates and locations.

    Hi Brian I recon you should restor it as a Sprintcar. As for not racing, yes only demonstrations. VERY VERY SPIRITED DEMONSTRATIONS.

    Not permitted to break traction. Those who get a bit carried away attract the ire of the flaggies. The three vintage/classic/historic clubs in Brisbane don't have a lot of money to spend on public liability insurance and bureaucracy hence they do not race. They don't do timing either as this could be construed as running a motor contest.

    Anyway, given the state that has been reached, it is easier to complete the conversion to road racer. It was used briefly on a short road circuit and I had a few laps in practice. This was a real hoot. A 600 hp methanol chev in a car that weighed about 600 kgs. Wheelspin at will, dirt track power slides on hotmix. People queried it having only a three speed box and the owner replied that he didn't need first, and the other two gears seemed more than adequate. Just stick your boot into the Hilborns and away it goes no matter what the roadspeed or gear selection.

    Andy, some hair raising drivers over your way.
    Those Supermods look like what we call "Heavy Hotrods" here in SA.
    Being an old school sidecar racer from speedway in the late 70's early 80's, I love seeing the old stuff still being raced.
    Our local track at Renmark in the Riverland of Sa runs ahemm, "spirited demonstartions" of those old girls. The drivers don't hang about either, some of them almost as old as the cars.

    33chinacars, yep the Vic rules are somewhat different, they have a Hotrod class, seems as long as the body still looks like what you say it is, then that's fine, I recall watching a Holden V8 powered Mini some years ago.
