    Hijab. Very useful headwear!

We hear a lot of negative coments about Islamic women's headress such as the hijab and the burka, but I'm not all that sure it's so well deserved.

Yes it can look like a small tent walking along the path towards you.
Yes it can be used to disguise one's identity.

On the other hand have you ever considered the practicality of them?

If you live in the middle of a desert where dust storms are common, a burka with lace in the eye slot can reduce the amount of sand and dust getting into your eyes. Both the burka and the hijab can stop your hair flying all over the place and also keep the dust out of your hair.

The most common complaint is that, in Australia we mostly don't live in deserts. So the benefits of sand storm protections are moot. On the other hand have you even watched a non-Islamic woman walking down the street? Have you watched the young mum, pushing the stroller, tending the other child walking besides her, carrying the shopping and trying to answer the mobile phone at the same time? Makes you think being one of the multi-armed Hindu diety would be a useful trait.

Well today walking my regular corridor I found the answer for the last problem. The hijab as the hands free mobile phone holder!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I have no problems whatsoever with Hijabs, turbans, nun's habits, monk's robes or bishop's hats, it's a free country and people should be able to believe what they want.

As long as they don't try to shove it down my throat, leave their religious based conflicts at the gates to Australia, and live happily together, I'm happy.

I believe “each to their own, live and let live….” and most importantly “mind your business”
But it should also be a fundamental requirement at law, that all head coverings are removed for the purpose identification.
Be it signing a legal document, being spoken by Police or other law enforcement and for the purpose ID photo’s being taken.
No if, butt’s or maybes, religious requirement or not...............
