    I have no problem obeying most posted speed limits... what I get grumpy about is when lazy people (i'm in restraint mode here ) knock off in the afternoon on road works and the lanes are back to normal but they leave the 40/50/60 kmh speed signs beside the road where it's normally 100/110kmh. Sometimes the signs are left there for a couple of weeks This only breeds contempt....

    I also wonder about the legality of council workers or road contractors arbitrarily (apparently) determining speed limits ... perhaps someone with more knowledge could enlighten me... please

    a couple things to be aware of

    you cannot caution someone who denies the offence as they must be given the oppourtunity to contest the matter.. so " I didn't do it" goes to court or pays the fine..

    about the headlights, in SA it is also an offence to use h/beam within 200m of oncoming vehicle ( a ridiculous distance with todays headlights and why just oncoming vehicles?) so they introduced legislation that makes it an offence to USE LIGHTS TO DAZZLE OTHER ROAD USERS this basically means if you flash towards other road users, you flick up just before you pass someone (a bastard move!) or you follow someone with h/beam on, you can get a stinger for it..

    There has been successful prosecution in SA of someone for flashing their headlights near an RBT/SPEED drop and then being prosecuted for hindering police..


    In SA there is no formula for speeds etc so most use common sense..

    If, of course, you see a friend of yours and flash your lights at him, there is no offence. If you THOUGHT it was his/her car, and it wasn't...

    Where I live (rural France) the normal driving speed on open country roads with no pedestrians and very few vehicles is 100-110 km/h. The official speed limit is 90 km/h.

    Of course, that's not much of a problem with my Series III but my BMW R100RS does 200 km/h when I let her (usually in Germany).

    I say, if you are willing to speed, i.e. break the law, don't complain when you get a fine. And don't complain if it comes from a static camera or a speed trap. You shouldn't have been speeding in the first place so pucker up buttercup.

    I have flashed my lights on the highway a couple of times, was there a speed trap or camera? Maybe...

    Unsurprisingly, I agree with nearly all of the posts of this thread. Here's my thoughts anyway.

    To my engineering brain way of thinking, getting booked for speeding (the booking as a deterent) is to prefer the punitive rather than address the cause (speeding).
    To me, the issue is not how many get caught speeding, but how many are speeding. Any reasonable practice to slow down drivers should be applauded. Think of it this way...flashing is nothing more than a mobile spontaneous speed hump..
    I also take umbrage at governments as well. I often think that the speed limit on most roads is too low. Cars are better and safer, drivers arguably better trained, roads better built so why reduce the limit? Indeed it should be increased commensurately with these improvements.

    I often toy with my management at work by offering the following:
    On dual open carriage ways the limit is 110,
    On the national highway 100,
    On major arterial roads 80 or 90,
    major suburban feeders 70,
    Secondary roads 60,
    Suburban streets 50,
    In front of primary schools and kindergartens 40.
    This explains why it's only 20 in front of infantry battalions and armoured regiments.

    And not only but also....

    It is an offence to 'flash' your headlights at any time - unless you're an Ambo, Firie or Plod. That's headlights, so low beam included.

    I think it's $88 in NSW and no points added to your licence......
