Judge says OK to flash lights.

Court in US rules in favour of motorist who warned other motorists of speed trap.

It is illegal to flash your lights to warn of speed cameras in Aus

Apparently in NSW there is no specific law to say you can't flash your lights to warn other motorists. But they can ping you for using your high-beams when traffic is closer than 200m.

So basically as I see it, as long as the oncoming traffic you are trying to warn is more than 200m away, or you use your LOW-beams to do it, they can't get you.

Yeah. What's a speed trap anyway?? If you're speeding, don't you deserve to get spanked? How about people who flash their lights after passing an RBT site because they're too dumb to realise it's RBT...

Is it okay to drive around at whatever speed you like?

Most police doing speed enforcement will give you 20kph over the limit (except in school zone), so I reckon that's pretty fair.

It's the (fixed) speed cameras that are a load of crap - and in NSW they've got at least two massive signs leading up to them, and the mobile ones are pretty obvious too.

Get to know someone who's been close to someone killed because of excessive speed and I think you'll change your view.

Speed cameras are often deliberately placed so as to catch drivers making an honest mistake as opposed to deliberately speeding. We're all human and make mistakes what pleasure is there to gain from this ?

Speed cameras, or the ridiculously titled 'Safety cameras', in Victoria are all about revenue collection which is done under the guise of road safety.

If flashing my lights causes other drivers to check their speed and perhaps slow down, I reckon I'm doing something positive about road safety, in contrast to a cynical government pretence to increase tax revenue.

Surprisingly enough most coppers booking people for speeding dont give a crap about the person doing 10kms over the limit. What they do find however is a lot of grubs with warrants, suspended licences etc. doing well over the limit. By flashing your lights when you see a radar you are giving these people a get out of jail card. Drunk drivers also speed and you let them slip through when you flash your lights to warn them.
If you enjoy spending your time on our road with these sort of people then by all means keep flashing.
Notice i havent mentioned speed cameras. No one likes speed cameras.

I never said that it is OK to drive around any speed you like, that's being a bit facetious. Of course people driving at excessive speed should have the book thrown at them, I've got no problem with that. What annoys me is the total lack of discretion displayed when one exceeds the speed limit by just a few km/h.

The cops where you live must be a special breed, because I can't imagine anyone being let off the hook for exceeeding the limit by 20km/h anywhere on the mainland at least. They are a bit more lenient here in Tassie (but I have been told by a local cop that 8km/h is the cut off).

I have been booked in Victoria doing 102km/h in a 100km/h zone. That is patently rediculous as the speedometers aren't that accurate! Blatant revenue raising.....

There is no way that I would warn someone of an RBT set up. I have no problem with testing for alcohol or drugs.

Most hwy supervisors I speak to tell their people to work on over 17k before booking unless there is someting else wrong "defect or driver attitude" etc and mudmouse would be in an even better postion to know than me. I have a terrible driving record from my younger days but have no problem with people being booked for speed as said cameras are a different set up and are not run by the police ,but in nsw you still have a fair margin before being booked unlike vic

An ex-Highway Patrol (NSW) on this forum (there are a couple) once told me he worked on +10% + 3km/h as the limit. Over the nearest 5km/h and you were done — which I think is pretty fair.

    So for:

    60 zone, 60 + 6 + 3 = 69km/h (70)

    70 zone, 70 + 7 + 3 = 80km/h (80)

    80 zone, 80 + 8 + 3 = 91km/h (90)

    90 zone, 90 + 9 + 3 = 102km/h (100)

    100 zone, 100 + 10 + 3 = 113km/h (115)

    110 zone, 110 + 11 +3 = 123km/h (125)

Not all police will follow that rule, of course. It may not apply in 40 and 50km/h zones.

There's also the minor problem of "obstructing a police office in the course of his duties", or whatever the phrase is. Pretty sure that's what the boys in blue relied on in the early days of radar detectors.
