    Trailer Towing Question

We have a tractor for example with a swinging drawbar and a single axle box trailer. Forget weights, downforce etc, this is a plan drawn on paper.
Imagine the pole/A frame of the trailer has a T attatched to the towing end to enable an offset towing point.

    A. With both tractor drawbar and trailer hitch set central the trailer will tow straight , stable and parallel to the centreline of the tractor.
    B. With the tractor drawbar offset 200 mm and the trailer hitch central the trailer will still tow straight, stable, and parallel to the tractor centreline but off to one side by 200 mm.
    C. With the tractor drawbar set central and the trailer hitch set 200 mm to one side, what happens?
Does it tow straight, crabwise ,or keep yawing from side to side?
Without making a model my simple mind is confused.

Does the trailer have a safety chain attached to the tractor?

The trailer is still being pulled from a central point, so all things being equal it would continue to pull straight, though with an offset centerline. It will however show more reaction to rearward forces acting on the trailer causing sway because of the extra leverage.

A case in point is when towing a baler we often moved the drawbar around to make the PTO easier to attach.

The additional forces around the swinging drawbar are more of a concern, but in practice most probably not.

As CC pointed out, hay balers have a swinging drawbar so that the baler travels offset to the tractor while it is operating so the pickup is out in the windrow beside the tractor. During transport the drawbar is swung over to the central position so the baler tows directly behind the tractor. The baler still follows a straight line, it is just offset one way or the other.

    Cheers, Mick.

I would have thought it would "Crab" as the trailer tow point is not in the centre of the trailer axle.

Is it even possible for a 2 wheel trailer to crab? It should tow straight but with whatever offset you have

I presume that a swinging drawbar means it is pivoted at both ends? If so then for example C it will crab, it'll be trying to steer towards the side with greater drawbar offset.
If the drawbar is rigidly attached to the trailer it'll pull straight unless getting close to jack knifing in the direction of the smaller offset.

Good point. I had completely forgotten about the bailer. Goodness knows I spent enough hours riding the sledge stacking square bales on it when I was a kid.

For reversing a caravan into an awkward spot, you can place a towball on the bullbar, offset to one side so as to have clear vision down one side.Depends entirely on the steering input as to how the van reacts. It is possible to push the van straight back.[ can be tricky , depending on the size of the van ] Bob

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
