has anyone been over recently? We will be going west to east in a few weeks. I was wondering what current conditions are.

Yeh basically sandy and big and red! Are you planning on going further or just slipping out from birdsville for a look?

comedians out of work and you try your humour on me.....
I'm travelling out of William Ck not up the Oodnadatta Track nor the Birdsville Track but basically north through unknown roads and tracks up towards the French Line/QAA then east to Birdsville, then I might head almost northeast till I get to Emerald.

I was there about a year ago when there was a puddle like that, but there was a detour around it. Probably best to try and contact the Birdsville police or pub for up to date info.

    Good luck.

I wanted to emulate Reg Sprigg's south north crossing, starting from the northeast side of Lake Eyre, but all of the Simpson in South Australia which lies south of the well used west east tracks is out of bounds.

There were a good number of tracks made in that area by the oil explorers.

    Don.
That's correct. We used the detour to get around to the back(western side) of Big Red where we were able to drive up for the photo.

If your a Facebook user you can be a friend of Birdsville Roadhouse (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Birds...75371039160539), who put up regular updates on conditions around Birdsville including info on Big Red.
