My views are probably a bit controversial, but having driven for over fifty years (both city and country and covering well over average kilometres per year) without ever being involved in an accident where the ANCAP rating was relevant (none of about half a dozen have involved any injuries), it gets a bit difficult to see it as a major factor in car purchase.

On the other hand, I have been wearing seat belts for almost fifty years, starting ten years before they were mandated anywhere in the world.

My experiences from selling plant and trucks to mines is that mines staff will stuff anything in short order.

To use a term that came from Southern Africa and is now politically incorrect, mines need to buy stuff that is Kaffir Proof.

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

the ancap ratings are all about the vehicles passive capability to protect its occupants in given situations such as rollovers, sliding, breakloss,etc... not about the vehicles durability. The rangers are already showing that. Toyota have promised the big mining companies that the hilux will be ancap 5 by middle next year and not to rush out and buy other brands. I think ancap5 is going to be costly with the number of airbags and some of these are going to go off in the rough conditions that these vehicles get into. the "roads" that the bulldozers and graders cut for access to the pits(not haul roads) are only a longer way than going over the highwall. Most dont realise the seriously hostile conditions these vehicles are in , the drivers generally dont flog them as a lot perceive, conditions dont allow it and theyd also be offsite so fast their feet wouldnt touch the ground. Ancap will protect occupants better in a rollover, and will help control a vehicle in the extremely slippery conditions that often exist and if the mines can prevent one injury or death through the type of vehicle purchased then the companies will be happy.

Still made by Isuzu...... biggest change is that they have dropped the Isuzu 4JJ1 and are now using a 2.8TD from VM

there has been legal change recently concerning responcibility of workers and employers and those that carry out procedures[volenteers] during their employment.

there has been culling of staff locally using economic down turn as an chance to check out staff.chinese companies have purchased mines and converted to pernament staff using their methods.one of te stand out issues is safety proceedures and efficency dta collection.gone are the its OK brigade we all joke about and claim it doesnt happen.

My co-worker had interveiws and medical to be told that the planned work had been cancelled and his name was short listed.
the same job was advertised again even as the the mine was sold and the workshop contracted out.they look to be after names for the future.
He was employed by a hire buisness for mining company equipment and starts next month with a promise of an onsite job when they get there new systems up and running.

manergers now have to prove they are not responcible-guilty until prooven inocent[NSW]-for bad events.
a popular storey recently is is a big political donatorto current government promising retrospective laws..he is before the courts over a quarry death-several years ago-a truck driven over an enbankment.

now under the current laws-not providing the safestt equipment could be seen by some as not providing a safe work environment---how long is a piece of string.

in the 90's i modified rodeo to go onto open cut mines.fitting safety switches-earth straps and sealing wiring.non slip rubber mats and seat trims.all to drive in open cut doing odd jobs.the vehicles i see around hear are worse with a masive market in mine ready vehicles.

destroying vehicles--Im a mechanic in the hunter valley..Im not aware of encouragement to look after equipment and have made plenty of income from obvious worker damage.I work for a shire and we cant get workers to look after their gear and they arent in adverse conditions.

4X4--my aunty rolled over a 200 series out weston a hyway when she hit an emu.. when she went to fill in reports it was amoungst a large number of similar eventsthe result was the department swapped to smaller cars and shorter trips..

I was involved with a few canter and isuzu explosive drill trucks.
fitting air conditioners to suit water mud and stationary without shade

i fead that the trucks are roll over complient-but the rear body was built to make certian if it did the cab would be protected..
