Thread: Prostate Cancer

To all who have expressed concern or given good wishes I thank you.
I was a tad emotional at the time of writing and realise now that many more are worse or at least as bad off. I certainly will not wait as long as my dad for a check up, finger or no finger!.
Funnily, my dad was asked if anyone in his immediate family had it. He said no, but upon reflection, his father died young at 57 so we don't know what pop had.
My dad is a fighter and has not yet earn't enough for me to live on his inheritance so he has to get well!

I think now it will have to be a point of honour that anyone who's posted on this thread now has to report back that they've been to the quack! I'm a typical guy who avoids doctors and it's woken me up.

I confess I have not. I'm still in my mid 30's. Although my younger brother copped testicular cancer just when he'd finished high school. BIG scare there - surgery and some of the nastiest chemo there is. I'm nearly out of the risk bracket, but I'm acutely aware of the genetics at work.

Oh well, we'll hear from you next week then?

Yep, the PSA and the CEA test (for bowel cancer) are only guides, not the be all and end all. When I was diagnosed with bowel cancer (in 2004) my CEA level was still in the normal range, it was at the top end of normal but not enough to alert anybody. My CEA level is now at the bottom end of the normal range. Great to be alive I can tell you, so there is hope!!!

Good on ya Ausfree and you of all people deserve a long, healthy life; I know how much you've helped Jason and Karen and kids - you're a top bloke! I had a BCC cut out of my head a few weeks ago and its amazing when you get any type of potentially serious illness how you suddenly look at what's important in life- it made me think about getting on and finishing all my half finished jobs so the family wouldn't have to if I pegged out early (not that I intend to).

My last PSA was so low it nearly did'nt register.. Had an ultrasound yesterday of my bladder/ prostate and kidneys. - Operator has never-ever seen such an un-enlarged one in a bloke of my vintage. (not 60, YET.)

No doubt seeing my 'real' Doc later this year will result in him ordering 'One Beer'......
