Cancer is indescriminate. My father died from lung cancer. He didn't smoke.
I wish your father and your family well.
Hi all,
My dad is about to undergo surgery for what is suspected to be prostate cancer and bowel cancer.
I do stress that the specialist believes the test returns suggest aggressive but benign growths not cancer. But I say if it smells like a duck, walks like a duck, tastes like a duck.....it's a duck!
Anyway, my dad is only 65! Lived a very clean life, stopped drinking and smoking at age 20 when he married mum. His only vice since has been a bit of weight due to fast food (I am also guilty). I get angry because not only has he lived clean, he is one of the nicest, fairest, most honest men alive. He does not deserve this!
In the late 80's he took a homeless HIV positive man into our home because he was homeless having been evicted from the hostel he lived in. The man died soon after but my father refused to ostracise him. He does stuff like that all the time.
I must say that my fathers prognosis is good compared to others but how cruel is life!
Just venting.
Ralph

I'm sorry to hear this news, life can be a mongrel. I hope everything works out better than expected with the tests.

Ashley
It's a terrible disease, I know a young bloke now in his early thirties, he had a brain tumor, he is now unfit for work. I knew a sales rep, fitness fanatic, didn't smoke or drink and got cancer in the bones, killed him at a young age.
Mum had cervical cancer, 1st op took most of the what she had, then it spread some more so in in a radical operation had her femininity completely removed, saved her life, been going for 20 years now. It effects lots around you.
Live every day to enjoy it.
It sounds more and more that your genetics have a lot to do with it. You can sway things by how you live, but only maybe and only so much.
Anyway, I don't know if it helps but I've noticed that the most miserable people often live the longest!
Good luck and best wishes with it all.

Sorry to hear the news. Hope all goes well with the op. Prostrate cancer is fortunately generally slower growing than other cancers, so hopefully your Dad caught his in time. The best thing ALL men should do is start getting regular PSA (Prostrate Specific Antigen) tests done once they turn 40. Particularly if anyone else in your family has been diagnosed with PC.
It's a simple blood test (and the doc can check your cholesterol, etc while he's at it), no need to stick anything up your rear end - so nothing to fear.
I'm nearly his age and I hope I stay free of it.
The difference between him and I is that he sounds a nice bloke.
My best wishes to your Dad for the upcoming op and the future.

my best wishes to your father, i am one year older than him and every 6 month I get a medical report about it.
My brother got a treatment in Argentina when he was 64 and now at 67 he is doing ok.
Get in touch with - St. Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital and try to see if he can get a second opinion in how to go about.
I'm glad you guys mentioned the tests, as I forgot about that. I asked a doctor this year about it, since for the last few years I knew I was headed for the "digital" examination age! And he said that these days they just do the blood test, look at family history, and he also said that if you have any symptoms you should get checked out right away. So a blood test every six months sounds like a good idea.

Sorry to hear, I was one who never wanted to go for a checkup, and only went to the Doc if I had to. Prostate cancer nearly got me. I had to see my Doc for a sick note and he talked me into a full checkup (finger up the bum) felt something suspicious and sent me for tests, PSA showed nothing, biopsy showed cancer of the Prostate. Had a Prostatectomy and have been clear now for 4 years. It seems that we all get it, some sooner than others, If you are diagnosed soon enough it's not a big deal. There are some videos on utube showing the operation and I believe they have the Devinci robot in Sydney. All the best, and do a lot of research before the op. it will help.
