    Portable Sand Blasters

    Hi All,

A few friends have suggested that I invest in a portable sand blaster.
I notice that you can pick them up for approximately $100 (5 Gallon)
    or approximately $285 (10 Gallon).
I assume that the size of the tank relates back to how much time you can blast before you wait for the compressor to fill back up? Bigger is always better.
I know that it will take longer to use a portable unit, rather than send the panels off to a professional - but I figure that owning/restoring Land Rovers it will soon proof to be a handy tool.
I know that I have to purchase the sand/glass/acorn/plastic beads.

So I have a few questions:

    * Has anybody bought/used a portable sand blaster? Are they any good?
    * What material would you recommend for steel (sand) ?
    * What material would you recommend for aluminium (series body panels) ?

As always any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    The Grey Ghost

I have extensively looked at this problem my self and now have much hands on experience .
You are wasting your time using and single phase compressor and even a smaller 415 volt compressor.........you need air and lots of it .
You will go though too much blasting medium if the machine does not recycle the blasting medium.....ie vacuum pick up or use inside a clean/dry contained area were you can shovel up the medium to reuse it.
Home sand blasting is generally a waste of time unless the job is extremely small.
Using beach sand is not on.
Most people garnet and then some times glass etc or a mixture.
Garnet is the go and it is not that cheap to buy and the reason why you must recycle the blasting medium.

This chinese machine has a vacuum pick up head and so it doesnt make a mess and recycles the garnet.
It is working on alloy panels from my alvis stalwart.
The process was slow and my 415 volt compressor was working hard.
The panels had paint stripper on them to remove most of the paint and the blaster was doing the final finish and hard to get places
The machine cost about $700 dollars.
The finish on the alloy was slightly rough , it was perfect for keying the paint to the alloy.

Finished and painted with no under coat ......

This is my cabinet sand blasting machine.
It works much better and also is expensive to purchase and uses alot more air and my 415 compressor doesnt really cope that well.
You need to purchase with any machine spare nozzles as they wear out.

At the end of the day....pay someone to do it or use another method.

Something to consider - rather than buy an electric compressor purchase a stationary engine driven one. I've no experience with sandblasting however a bit with agricultural applications for compressors. We can't get three phase and the portability and functionality of the petrol and diesel ones are excellent.

I also have a small gravity feed hand held thing purchased for about $50 dollars.
It for what it is....... very good.
The gravity feed over comes many problems and it is effective for very small jobs(forget anything bigger than a few loose bolts or a mirror arm...something like that.)
Total lost, so you will go though the garnet.
Must wear breathing gear and a very good face shield with this one .

SCA Air Sand Blast Gun - 600ml - Supercheap Auto Australia

Normal sand is is not good enough and is too damp........normal sand will clogg the gun or delivery.

I bought one for doing a trailer 3 years ago. I ended up doing most with paint stripper and used the blaster for rough and hard to get areas and rust. They are ok and really only any good for small items. I gave mine away when I moved. They chew through nozzles and valves like there is no tomorrow. The outlet from the unit blocks regularly. It is a very slow and labor intensive process foe bigger items and messy.
When I can set up I will get a small cabinet style one for doing bits and pieces and probably take bigger items to a soda blaster. However is a decent second hand larger unit comes up (have just missed a couple in the past) then maybe.
