    12v Compressor Recommendations ?

Im after a portable compressor to carry on my D2 for airing up and down BFG's, also for bikes and a boat.

last one I had which cost about $75 bucks kept blowing fuses and overheating and jamming after 3-4 mins on a tyre.

    Any recommendations ?

    Up to $200?

ABR Sidewinder MK4. Faster than the ARB unit, uses less current, and is cheaper. It pumps my tyres up from 22 to 40PSI in under a minute per tyre. Only a it more than $200, and well worth it. All comes packed in a case with a long hose & deflator. Mine has just done a trip up through the Kimberly (not with me unfortunately) and served all 3 vehicles in that group. One of them had a cheapy, but they gave up on that early and just used mine - 2 of them have ordered these since they got back.

It was one of the units in a big compressor test that Overlander 4WD mag did a while back, and rated very well, outperforming compressors 3 times the price.

    Compressor ABR

Edit - their service was first class as well - easy to deal with and delivered promptly.

It is a great little unit. I forgot to mention that it is also suitable for permanant mounting inside a vehicle and to a tank to operate lockers, etc if you need to do that now or in the future. I will be installing mine with a small tank soon with some airlines running to each side of the car to pump the tyres up with. Then I have an excuse to go and get the air lockers I want...

These twin pot compressors are indeed very fast and are proving very popular in the Middle East with our Off Road clubs.
As with everything these days I think you'll find that they are a re-badged Chinese made unit that work very well for 6 months but then they start to run out of puff.
Popular faults are the On/Off switch burns out. The Pressure relief button seizes and the aluminium piston starts to disintegrate.

I would hope that ARB have addressed these faults in the everyday units and have had the side-winder manufactured to their own higher quality specs.

It's impossible to tell from just looking at pictures since I have seen twenty or thirty companies selling the exact same 12v compressor.

I have the ironman Flo Pro Max
    Ironman 4x4 Compressor

real fast at pumping up a 33" tyre. Knocks over the first 2 tyres from 16 psi to 40 psi in about a minute each. Slows a little for the 3rd and 4th tyre. It is a large and solid unit. It has so far withstood being jammed up under the false floor in the back of the defender over many bumpy tracks. I'd buy another and comfortable to recommend it to anyone. Ebay has them for $242 + postage. I think i paid around $200 if you have time to wait for a bargain.

Whatever you buy, buy quality so you only pay once.

    cheers MLD

Dont know how much they are but I have a Thomas blue tongue unit, sold by opposite lock and maybe doesnt inflate tyre quite in a minute but is pretty quick and has never let me down. Its around 4 or 5 years old now maybe older and still going strong.
    Mine same/similar to this one

Blue Tongue 4 Compressor-Home - Recovery gear - Air compressors - -Opposite Lock Holdings
