90+% of the original 2.25d is still available.
So a guy I know was racing VW beetles, I know a lot were sold but I dont see many around anymore so assumed (not knowing much about this) that parts would be harder to get, he told me parts were easy and cheep.
So the question I have this regarding the td5 vs tdi300 (talking discos here) but only in terms of long term parts availability and keeping them on the road for 10 years from now or perhaps longer. One LR specialist once told me the tdi300 was old now and hard to get parts for, so get a td5.
I would like to know what people think if you get a late model 97 or 98 tdi300 vs td5, is the td5 in advantage because of parts or even condition? any peripheral information also welcome around this subject of keeping old cars going in an affordable way.

I have been dreaming of the day i would own a defender/puma and after much conflict with hand brake i purchased a 2.4 puma and to my horror it broke down 120klm down the road from where i bought it. which turned out to be the vac pump seal. since then the gear shift has started to rattle in 6th gear hopefully its just the linkages any clues?. the remotes for the alarm have both gone flat. one of the tyres has bubbled out the wall, the engine seams to have a ticking sound which is im told just the poor fuel we have in australia. and this is in the first two weeks of owning the *&%#$% but as i already love the **** box with a passion i will persist to remedy the problems and forge forward. can anyone tell me how many amps the alternator/generator pumps out in standard form?
Ask your 'Land Rover Specialist' what engine is used in the UK army Wolf's then ponder how many spares and for how long those spares will be available
The engine only went out of production four or five years ago, it was still used in South America, Africa and Eastern Europe instead of the TD5.
I'd rather a Disco II TD5, I still remember the first time I went for a ride in one, it impressed me so much and I wasn't that into Landies at the time, but a DI is dead simple and easy to work on
I thnk you will be fine for parts on the 300tdi....though you cant buy a new head for a 200tdi...
The TD5 if sorted, is reputed to be the better engine for performance and longevity though
abit off topic but i think there were 27 million beetles made and there is not a great deal of them left compared to how many were made. compare that to how many series were made and how many are still going
VW Beetles and Kombi's are like any other vintage/collector cars and utes,when restored they are often shedded and only used on club/special days, in my local area there is a Volkswagen specialist, and I often see restored/well cared for vehicles both as special interest registered vehicles and as daily drivers,I was recently informed that split windscreen Kombis can fetch up to $50K depending on model and quality.
Just look at the value of a 90% + original 48/9 model 80" series 1 and they are a simple vehicle in comparison to a Rover Sedan or a restoration on a Morris Minor

I know of a bloke who has a several restored and regoed 50's/60's vehicles his daily driver is a dunger early small body Camery
