Eeerrrrr Helloooooooo.
I did say it was on a Main Road (but not nearby) & she reasonably believed that the cops would get off their arses & do something promptly. Not an unreasonable thought since this matter had been widely publicised a few weeks prior.
Hind sight is a wonderful thing.![]()
Quite so. As it was on a vacant block how were we to know if it had been put there intentionally for someones use or whatever, despite it still being illegal?
This subject probably means more to me than maybe most as during my time as an Apprentice my employer used to subscribe to the USA published Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Journal each month. (No online stuff back then)
In one issue, I remember seeing a couple of photos of two young kids who jammed them selves into an abandoned Refrigerator while apparently, it was discovered, playing Hide & Seek with their mates & couldn't get out once they pulled the door shut & suffocated & is another personal reason I get angry by this stuff, (No magnetic Gasket seals back then, (only positive action mechanical locks), Mag gaskets were probably 20 years into the future) A refrig lock is specifically designed to keep the fridge door tightly closed against the seal.
Both were dead & had been there for a couple of days before they were found by the NY cops.
That vision has stayed with me all these years & another reason I get angry at other's incompetence & lack of fore thought for innocent people.
Mrs Summer may not have suffocated but the result was the same. As I said ^^ truly terrifying especially if it was dark.
Maybe those that will/may be held accountable could be also shut alone in the same freezer just to experience the terror & panic & of course the cold, of what she went through but I doubt that would happen as there would be all sorts of Human Rights Laws & Regulations & Departmental procedures that would disallow this.
No different really to the Police demonstration of the new TAZER (at the time ) Demo of a Senior Officer getting done by the Tazer. "He didn't like that up 'im Capt Mainwaring". Ho no.
Most Fridgies would have been in this situation albeit as a "Joke" by stupid shop staff, or accidentally had the door closed on them & the light turned off. Had happened to me quite a number of times over my working life. NOT NICE.
It is bad enough when using the bog at a Shopping Mall dunny when some smart arse goes out the door & switches off the light leaving one in blackness. Twice that has happened to me & once when a little kid was doing his business. He panicked. No emergency lighting.
Refrigerator death - Wikipedia
I got trapped in a cool room for about an hour by a stupid arsehole playing a work prank on the newest employee...me. only lucky coz a deli worker from the super market i was working in opened the wrong door by mistake that i got out. Freezer and cool room next to each other and doors were next to each other. Light goes out when door is closed. Freezer had mushroom safety push but cool room didnt. Perpetrator got sacked. I left. Never went into cool room ever again. Bit hard to be a trainee storeman and not go into the cool room. If i see a fridge or freezer on the side of the road or even in an abandoned block i check if the doors are off or they cant be locked. Ive even torn off the seals so they cant be sealed if someon wants to do something stupid. Just one of my things. Could be my kid visiting a friend that gets trapped. Cheers
I get it 67h. Not nice is it?
Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be the abandoned refrigs around these days due to the life cycle of those old types. Thank goodness!
Cool/Freezer rooms are a different kettle of fish & I'm glad your bastard got sacked with a bad record.
Next time it could have been him.
What if there had been a building fire/false alarm at the time & late in the day & the building had to be evacuated?? 67h would have very cold bollocks when/if they came back to you before going home.
You would have had a problem clocking on in the morning even though you had been there all night.
A Fridgie with a pair of pliers in his kick would have known what to do to shut the plant down assuming he could see or feel his way to the TEV, but at some risk of spinning fan blades.
Then the owner would want you to cough up for a new TEV. Yeah right!![]()
I was only 14 at the time. Scared the **** outa me. Still wont go into a freezer or cool room unless the safety latch is there. Mate was working at the abbs at Narrogin in WA. He had to walk through the snap freezer to get to his work station in by products or walk around the whole plant, 20 mins, so when i went to see him one night, i did the walk around.
Cheers.
Cold bollocks hurt too.
We spend all day working in cold and freezer rooms.
Have never been stuck in one yet, although we are pretty careful what we do.
These days many places have warm jackets, caps, and gloves and pants to put on over your own clothes, if you want, not like the old days.
And some sites have an alarm module that hangs around your neck in case of emergency.MAndatory to have it if going into a room for any reason.
Working in the morgues are the only rooms that are a bit of a concern, particularly the main Govt sites,as the product is wrapped in clear plastic, unlike the hospitals and funeral places.![]()
I wonder whether that was available at the SAPOL (SA Police) site in 2016? Doesn't really sound like it. It would have been a life saver for Mrs Summer. 54 is no age for a woman to die due to other persons ineptitude or any other cause really. And some sites have an alarm module that hangs around your neck in case of emergency.MAndatory to have it if going into a room for any reason.
I assume the module activates an exterior alarm in a control Room or nearby?
Goes directly to security, and also alarms on the BMS,both in the control room thats manned 24/7.
We only have two large sites that have them.
The Qld police academy in Brisbane doesn't have them,i doubt SAPOL would have.
While on Correctional Services sites,we have a duress, clipped on the belt, which will do the same job, plus activates if it isn't kept vertical.
It sends a signal directly to master control, which is also manned 24/7.
We had an incident where a lady slipped over in a cold room that had a tiled floor, in a TAFE.
She never returned to work, due to a brain injury.
Knocked unconscious, one of the other canteen staff found her.
The wall between the cold and freezer room had ice on it on the cold room side,as the insulation had broken down. The ice continually dripped, causing water to run across the tiled floor in the cold room. The wall needed replacing.
We noted it numerous times on our services, over the years, but the TAFE informed us they didn't have the money to replace the wall.
Shortly after the incident, the tender documents appeared to replace the room.
We missed the job.
The guys that replaced the room didn't replace the pipework, which was called for in the spec. The insulation on the pipework was shagged.
They wouldn't come back and do it,so we did it do and charge![]()
