Not sure if you were suggesting that beat the camera in Peter Williamson's Celica in 1979, but an important difference is that the vision and sound from the Celica was broadcast live.

However, it was still interesting to watch.

I think that 1970 would have still had the cars and the bikes on and it was at Easter if so, I would have been up on the mountain,there is something about coming down the "Old Conrod Straight" on a vintage motorcycle that is hard to beat,but being passed by a gentleman motorcyclist on a Vincent Black Shadow,sitting bolt upright complete with "Puddin Basin Cromwell Helmet" when you are lying on the tank trying to get the "ton" sure puts power into perspective

That particular Vincent was the NZ landspeed record holder in the 50's and is still around in Qld now

LEt's just say the insides of that Celica engine were far removed from the 500 let alone the school run models. Officially a 2 or 3T, unofficially a 151/2E.

And funnily enough if you follow the link from the comments in the video to the source page, it says that Williamson is driving a Camaro...

Perhaps I should have said, "Not a bad effort for a car that was a similar colour to the ones mothers used to drop the kids off to school." :D:D

Maybe it was because I owned a 1969 Crown at the time and was a bit biased, but I must confess that I took more interest in that little 2 litre car hounding those much bigger vehicles down the dipper than I did in how many laps ahead Brock was.

I know it was far removed from the standard "hair dressers' car" standard model, but I still think that the Celica had an enviable record at Bathurst.

Prior to the appearance of the Celica, about all I was interested in was how many of the larger cars the little Minis would beat and how many laps the Studebakers would manage before one of the wheels fell off.:D

Do you have any more specifications for the Celica? I couldn't find anything specific, except for the earlier one being nicknamed the "Axe Car" for reasons that some older members will remember. :)

Race Cam is still here, bigger and better.

Toranas are gone and are a part of history. :D

What about the E49 Charger? Faster over the 1/4 mile than any Ford or Holden of the that era! Maybe not a legend but still part of 500 history!
