Hmm, can't remember now but thought they used the 16V 4AGE, although Smithy said they were geared to get up the hill so they had to float the throttle coming down Conrod for about half the length.

It became corporate policy, even though some of their engineers knew a 4V head is more efficient.

It may have even been Masao Furusawa that insisted on a 4V head and had secretly built one along with the big bang engine for MotoGP as a test engine for Rossi to trial when he first went to Yamaha, then they quietly dropped it.

Then you get into the smallport v bigport debate.

The 86's originally had the 4AC, but were allowed the GE since they were also available in other Corolla models as well as 86's in overseas spec.

Spent several years on a crew during the Group C/A (and HQs) era with the Motor Sport Developments Sprinter owned by Malcom Rea. Was definitely 4AGE 16V. Found some old pics on the net (attached). They brought back some old memories. IIRC, the top speed down Conrod was just shy of 260Kph.

What a great little car the Sprinter was in Grp A spec. Made a really nice rally car too - good size, well balanced, simple and decent power.

For some reason the colour of the sky in the first photo immediately makes me think of 1987, but being a Tooheys 1000 it must have been later than that - was it 92 when the Skyline won and Jim Richards uttered those immortal words?

Gee we had some weather up there in the late 80s and early 90s. Great memories - thanks for the photos.

Just to add some (Land) Rover content to this thread.

I still think the nicest sounding V8s I ever heard up there were the Rover Vitesses in 84.

Getting a bit nostalgic now, so I went trawling through some old negs the wife has scanned onto the PC. The Tojo is a Carina which Malcom Rea built for the Super Tourer (2 litre) class and we ran the Mazda 626 in Prody Cars then as well. Ken Talbert (who owned the 626) had his bum in a few seats at the time.

I have a team shot outside the pit garage somewhere that I will have to dig out.

You forgot to mention that the said stock standard Volvo (242GT) narrowly missed out on scoring a top 20 finish. Hardly a mobile chicane. Roll on to 1984 with the 242T.
