    Stake warning.

We've just had a long weekend at Mt Jackson north of Southern Cross WA and one on our companions had a nasty shock when his tyre was staked by a very nasty looking bit of metal designed to do just that.
Apparently there were signs up stating that the track he was on had been "staked" but no one suspected that what it really meant was that purpose built stakes had been planted deliberately to stop any use of the track.
The offending object was a flat bit of steel about 2" (50.80mm) wide and 8" long and had 2 bolts welded on it which had been ground down to a rough point and buried with these points facing up.
One ruined tyre on his D4 and not a happy vegemite. Talking to a local and he reckoned the bloke that does this has many mineral leases on the surrounding area and doesn't want anyone in there at all. He's also well connected with the local tax/ratepayer funded big noters!
Seems to me to be highly illegal to do that on tracks shown on maps (or anywhere really) and could be highly dangerous for those travelling alone let alone expensive to replace tyres.
So be warned that this is a very real danger in this popular camping area.

That's not only illegal it's downright dangerous.
Unless it's privately owned roads or he has authorisation from local council to have them closed off, he shouldn't be doing anything to restrict access.
As for his method, permission or not he shouldn't be doing it.
Even on private property you could be prosecuted for the use of such an item i'd imagine.
Report it to the local authorities.
    Cheers

    Hi Muppet.
The blokes whose tyre was ruined is definitely taking it up with the authorities.
But knowing grubbiness of most local pollies and their mates I doubt if anything will be done apart from a few loud noises and maybe, (highly unlikely as that would be admitting guilt) a new tyre.

This is just me, but I'd be making as much noise as possible if nothing happens.
That's a serious safety issue, the only people who can deploy road spikes are the cops.
Stick it to them, so to say

Surely where this fellow lives is also common knowledge.

I see it as a real public liability issue, regardless of whether or not its on private property. If a person was walking and tripped and landed on a spike I'm sure the person who put it there could be sued.

but to prove he laid em down you may need video/photo evidence... you'll have to do a stakeout!

I agree, the stakes are certainly high enough to warrant such a measure

Yes it is definitely illegal and the tenement holder concerned would be in breach of the conditions of grant for the tenement, for endangering public safety.

Actually I was told his name was on the posters or the local I was talking to told me it, but proving he laid them would be the problem.
His motive is to protect any gold which may be laying about from fossickers I suppose.
    Whatever, it's highly dangerous.
