I grew up on a diet of mostly Sky.
I was able to see them in concert in the 80's & 90's three times.
John Williams is an excellent guitarist one of my favourites.

I agree with mention John Williams, he is an excellent classic music player and learned classic Spanish guitar under Andres Segovia.
His duets with Paco Peña and Julian Bream are excellent. I have few CD's from them.

For those that like to see a gifted guitarist I recommend to look this video of Sylvain Luc.
His duets with Bireli are awesome. Top manouche music
Is long, more than 2 hours, so download it and enjoy his magic

I remember one day at school vividly...I would have been about 16 and this lovely old man came and spoke to us. He was failry well known for his Christian writing, I think, but he came to talk to us about his son....and specifically, how he had to bury his son at a young age thanks to the perils of drug and alcohol abuse.

He was called David Kossof and his son, Paul, was the guitarist for Free...mentioned above. I think it was the first time I'd ever met anyone who had a famous relative or even anyone who knew someone who had died way before their time.

Still makes me shiver a little. Such a waste of talent.

On the original subject though. For me it's Knopfler, Hendrix and Clapton. May, while being brilliant and having his own sound, was unfortunate in that he stood in the shadows of the greatest frontman ever to pick up a microphone....but he wasn't up to the others' standard of total originality for me.

Seems most have forgotten the great Les Paul, he was still rocking it with "the kids" at over 90 years of age.
His wife, Mary Ford, was a pretty good guitarist too just quietly.

Could also add the amazing Chet Atkins. And I have to agree about Lester and Earl, plus BOTH the Winter brothers, and let's not forget George Harrison, and Buddy Merrill, who played in the Lawrence Welch Orchestra, or maybe Zack Kim.

Either way, they are a damned sight better than my meager rythm guitarist skills.
