I'm surprised Vlatko Stefanovski hasn't made a mention yet. One of the low profile guitarists who would have to make the top 5 of all time in my book.

So I gather we 're talking rock guitarists. Well in no particular order my pick would have to be
Rory Gallagher,
RICHIE blackMoore,
frank zappa,
Eric Clapton,
Jimi Hendrix,
Steve Howe,
robben ford,
jimmy page,
stevie ray vaughn,
Pete Townsend
With full respect to the dudes like Knofler and Gilmour et al who I grew up listening to, I have to mention some other guys who get quite different, but still awesome sounds from their guitars. Firstly, Thurston Moore and Lee Ronaldo from Sonic Youth have been making a fantastic racket since the late seventies. Secondly, Johnny Marr from the Smiths still makes my hair stand on end (check out 'The Queen is Dead'). And finally, every time I listen to Radiohead at least one of their three guitarists is doing something brilliant. These are guys who use their guitars quite differently from the old, blues inspired legends but still make great music.
Loving this thread.:D
Can't top what's already been listed.
