Who are they trying to kid? Once that factory is fully established, then I would imagine all production will go there. Bye bye Land Rover...
Not sure if this is news to other people or just me. Seems LR (and Jag) are going to start manufacturing in China now, with Chery.

Fair enough.

I think it has a lot to do with the bamboo curtain. While the Chinese want to sell their stuff throughout the whole World they are more reluctant to allow foreign products unfettered access to their internal market, hence the local assembly in China by a few European car marques.
Remember Chery is the old Austin-Rover group sold by BMW to the Chinese. Tata has the rights to the Rover name and Rover viking device.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Also note that you can't just set up a foreign company in China. They set up joint ventures instead.
So now you will be able to choose whether you want your D4 with or without asbestos???
I wonder if Ateco will be able to parallel import them and undercut LRA

It seems 20% of Jag/LR sales go to China so it would seem a wise move. Mercedes are also looking into a joint Chinese venture.

You have to have a local partner to manufacture in China.
This could be a way for them to really get the price of the new Defender WAY down and seriously undercut the Japanese opposition. After all, JLR has said its aim for the new Defender is to steal the Hilux's market dominance.
Another story said JLR was also planning to manufacture in Brazil, I think from memory, for the Americas market.
It would be surprising if they don't also manufacture in India with Tata.
15 years ago the cars in China were mainly volkswagen passats - locally assembled. Now every form of exotica is on the road and in numbers... the numbers of range rovers is amazing and held in equal esteem as the porsche cayenne and bmw X series cars... chery do not make a good car today, but that doesn't mean they won't in 5 years time.
No chance of a really cheap defender out of China, if it is substantially cheaper than a hilux made in thailand, it will be very poor.
China do NOT play fair in the global market and are actually quite dishonest in their business methods for gobbling up and dominating markets.
They look like they are smiling at the rest of the world with the pure joy of being able to provide goods (and services) for us all. But they are really just eyeing off our wealth and moving whatever mountains they need to so they can steal it ALL away from us.
At some point I hope we swing back to our old western allies and build a competitor using Chinese standards against them. Either that or we start demanding they play fair or be blocked from our markets. This crap of us getting into their markets is a ruse on their behalf.
At what point does the rest of the world get leaders who will balance this indecent assault on our past, present and future wealth/strength?
Hoo-Roo,
Dave.
It's only indecent if they invade us. If we buy and sell stuff to them willingly then it's decent.
On theo ther note sale in LR products grew from 60% last year I would say that for a good while after the factory is built they will be flat stick building for domestic demand. Once they can they will move out into the wider asian markety. Would that include Australia? Good question, perhaps. Maybe by then we may feel differently.
If I was to buy a new bike, I'd buy a Triumph Thruxton. I was so thrilled that the name got resucitated and a new factory was built in UK. I was thrilled when the company proved a success building bikes in English bikes that people wanted. When they brought back air-cooled twins I was ecstatic. Now I fond they have been so successful they have built a factory in Thailand and that most Trumpy's sold in Australia were assembled in Thailand. Okay, I'd like them to be built in UK but Ive moved on. I'd still happily have one.
I daresay shifting the factory is not going to stop me being a Landy customer even though I might not like it.
