I got washing soda from the supermarket, it was in a plastic bag, large wet looking crystals. I think it was in the cleaning products area.

You can prepare your washing soda at home by heating it in your oven (200° C) for an hour.

Once taken out of the oven and cooled put it in an airtight container other wise the washing soda will convert back to backing soda if exposed to air.

Molasses is something I would like to try aswell.
Ron - once you bring the part out of the molasses and clean it - how quickly does surface rust begin to form afterwards?
I have also read that molasses will eventually eat away the whole metal if left in for too long.
Molassis is the safest. It only eats the rust.
I have had alloy wheel cylinders in it for a week and no sign of corrosion but others say it does eat alloy.
