I grew up with Land Rovers and learnt to drive on an old manual Range Rover which got me out of trouble on a few occasions.

Am currently looking to downsize but still need to tow so my options are a Toyota Kluger (will no doubt be capable and very reliable but Boring with a capital B), a Nissan X-Trail (not bad looking but less capable) and the FL2 (best looking, capable but probably less reliable and more expensive to repair)

Guess which one is my favourite......... Nothing beats the feeling of sitting in a land rover:D

And as for the SUV's,, hasn't the Freelander 3 just been released? I thought I saw an add for it last night.

Owning an x-trail, and having driven current and previous kluger models owned in the family I'd class the X-trail as better all round. Cannot get comfortable in the klunker, earlier models were very plasticky for a toyota, the later ones I drove were top line but just seemed like leather over plastic.

Had the xtrail for 8 years, never missed a beat, tows well and for what it is it's capable off road within it's capacities. It's only downside is in sand apparently, the auto/4WD system apparently tends to overheat. Which just needs you to stop and wait a while.

Someone needs to post the video onto the various other forums that don't discuss the "other" brand of 4WD. I can't I've been IP banned from most.

My Landies have been the most reliable vehicles I've owned and often cheaper to fix and maintain too...

Unfortunately I can't say the same for my Rangie, has cost a fair bit in repairs but I still love it - when it goes well it's brilliant to drive and tow with.

We had a a New shape x-Trail Ti, nothing wrong with at all, very nice car, alittle bland, all the toys, for 20k less than a free loader...

I have heard that the x trail struggles towing. Friends have them and they don't like towing more than about 1500kgs. Kluger tows better and drives nicely but I just don't like the way it looks. It's a struggle between head and heart for me!

You will regret the Kluger! Absolutely no feel of what your doing... steering, accelerator etc all rubbish! The Xtrails are a neat car, but as suggested would struggle with heavy loads... the diesel should be the better way to go.

You said downsizing... from what? The Kluger is a beast of a thing! Massive and yet doesn't feel like your getting any room.

Have you considered a Subaru Forester? I know from experience it was a great surprise how it handled towing, albeit only 1500kg but was a dream. The diesel should be the go there as well for economy and decent torque, or the Outback.

Personally I think any vehicle has the potential to break down, cost a lot etc, but if your picky, and prepared to maintain it you should have a reasonable experience. If buying second hand that is where you need to be prepared to pay slightly more for the good condition cars. Service history etc.

I would choose the FL2 out of those. If I could have afforded one of those when I got my Suby I would have.

As for people saying "oh you have a land rover" I just laugh and say why does toyota now have "crawl" and all that electronic trickery that was the reason D3's and stuff were so bad. No mechanic in the bush will know everything anymore, so go in style, comfort and with the knowledge that you own a pioneering vehicle. :D

Cant comment about its towing ability, never used it for towing..

I'm downsizing from a Rangie so all the others are small by comparison!

I need a 2000kg towing capacity so the forester is out (although I wish it could tow as I really like it!)
Tribeca is rated to 2 tonne though. Do you know anything about it?
