Have had problems, front drive shaft falling out, another rad and a clutch (second), which now shudders reallly badly in low range BUT it's mine and I luv it!

water pump x 2

all new Rad hoses x2

front/rear rotors and pads

on 4/th set of tyres last was Coopers WOULD NEVER BUY THEM AGAIN!

New front pads coming up.

2 drivers' side window bitss! first one not fitted by me , second one fitted by me and wil be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh that's a shame.

Tribeca seems to be the most unpopular Subaru ever made. For good reason. It's a heavy unit, not good on fuel use and very poor resale as it isn't like other subarus with the desirability and demand. There are better options.

Have you considered BMW x3, or a ford territory? Go territory over kluger.

Jeep grand Cherokee? Has pretty good reports and covers your towing req...

I just got the following email today from a friend . . . mate . . . er, aquaintance who is happy with his Hilux and paying other people to fix it. He's happily ignorant of anything to do with how it actually works and is the kind of guy who would rather pull it somewhere by his teeth and talk about what an adventure it was than to fix it on the spot.

I notice he doesn't mention the time an oil cooler or something cracked and they had to wait weeks for another one to arrive from Japan. And it rides like a Series IIA with rusted-up springs.

"UR a sucker for punishment...so here it is....Land Rovers are not much good in a car port.....my trusty Hilux has done 60000kms to your 3 landrovers ........how much was that??? .....and cost me a fraction of the price if U add up the hundreds nay thousands of man hours at say $100per hour your trusty Land Rovers have cost you. And did I mention the engines and the rest freighted over at great cost not only to your pocket but to the environment......[I've deleted my wife's name here] you R crazy AND deluded...your hubby wisest adopting a low profile......give me my Toyota Hilux anyday.....tho I will concede the Landy is a beautiful beast worthy of restoration projects but as a practical day to day vehivle.....still unconvinced...mayhap you might prove me wrong when your project is on the road but there will be some catching up to do...hopefully in convoy to El Questro next dry...thats where our iron horse will be taking us!

That's a tad un-necessary.

This just confirms my theory that HiLux drivers are illiterate, abusive, and have a poor grasp of concepts like logic.

Although I don't want to turn this into a Hilux bashing thread, I just had to laugh when I went to my mates workshop the other day. He is a Diesel Mechanic, but only does trucks - he won't even work on his own cars most of the time.

Anyway, walked in there the other day and asked 'where's your Hilux'. The reply was 'In at the dealers getting a new clutch fitted'. I had a dig at him about being a mechanic but too lazy to do this himself, then I realised it is only a few years old so I asked why the clutch had gone with so few KM on it (under 100kkm). His response was that this was the third clutch it had had since new and that was normal for this vehicle, and on his last one too that he sold at about the same KM. he doesn't tow with it, and rarely goes off road, so I'm not sure if this is just him, or if this is normal for these.

It also has a niggling electrical fault that causes the car to run like a pig from time to time, but the dealers have never been able to track that down.

After I stopped laughing, I told him he can never make a comment again about my choice in vehicles...

Seriously, why do people actually pay money for Hiluxes? Are they stupid or something?

I think it's about a 2003 or so model, too. The older shape, anyway. It replaced their clapped-out old Mitsubishi, which apparently was also better than a Landie!

Someone else up here had the same model Hilux and was telling me how wonderful it was. Even though the timing belt snapped and some valves were bent or something. But apparently it was still a great car, so I guess that was "routine maintenance"?

I have to say I was a bit jealous of everyone else having an idiot story, but now I can join your noble ranks with pride, and I look forward to the next one!

yeah. Just like replacing the big end bearings ever 18 months is a service item, but Td5s getting oil in the loom is a "major reliability issue".
