We don't know how much local knowledge he had and if he had watched others drive through first to be sure the road was OK. The vid. shows a tractor going through, so obviously other vehicles were using it. And the Defender was obviously up to the job.
out for fun during a flood = irresponsible
commuting to work = necessary maybe?
out to rescue others, help the emergency services = commendable
staying at home, looking after you and yours, stock and property during a flood = sensible
so which was he doing?? you just can't tell from the video.
rock climbing = irresponsible
kayaking = irresponsible
surfing = irresponsible
skiing = irresponsible
paragiding = irresponsible
skydiving = irresponsible
etc etc.
There's more to life than sitting at home wrapped in cotton wool lest some disaster befalls us, and at the end of the day, if we didn't have people like the first guy who drove through high water for fun, we wouldn't have people like the second guy had the know how to drive in and pull an old guy from his car.
Look at it from this perspective:
He's established that the road is still in a usable condition, and that with correct technique and a properly equipped vehicle it can still be driven.
He's provided scout intel for emergency services.
Whoever goes into the unknown first is always taking a risk, but they're still providing information even if something goes wrong.
If you listen to him in the video it kind of sounds like he's on his way home, then again I could have missed something :D
