Seriously though the only issue I see is the head pressure being to great. But you could easily test it.

The other thing would be to use a hand pump (probably a bulb type would do). What ever you do put an NVR in the line.

I've been given a McNaught hand pump so I will give that a try. I hadn't thought of an NRV. A good point, Derek.

Because 60L will burn the garage down more effectively?

More that it would make a bigger mess if it leaks. I thought of putting it outside the garage but it would look pretty awful at the front of the garage where the heater will be. I suppose if I could source a square container, it might look better outside than a 20 litre drum.

yep agree, get dry wood if you need oil.
What about ozone layer?

60 litres is more volume than 20 litres, but it is the height is what you should be thinking about, as the higher the top of the fluid is, the greater the pressure becomes at the outlet at the bottom.

How do you know when your oil container that is up in the air is nearly full and about to overflow making a mess ?

Agreed. That's another reason to use a smaller container and mounting it high. I haven't done the maths yet to work out the head pressure when full cf. when near empty and thus the change in pressure. I'm using a needle valve to control oil flow to the burner.

A sightglass up the side of the day tank. I could probably fit a ballcock, possibly out of an old toilet cistern, to shut off the flow (maybe use a cistern as the day tank?). I can't remember how we used to do it at work for our diesel generators (500kvA) - too long ago. We probably had an overflow return line to the underground tanks. Something similar would be the easiest to implement.
