    RACV towing

    Hey all

About a month ago my D1 failed to proceed, fortunately I was near a friend's place about 200km from Melbourne at the time and was able to park up there and take a train home. There was no urgency due to it not being my DD anymore.

I'm now looking to get it recovered back home to a Land Rover specialist but apparently RACV won't tow it more than 20km on their basic package. Even Total Care only do 100km country towing. They'll only do a recovery back to home base if it can't be fixed locally within 3 days, and I'd rather it go to a specialist.

Has anyone had any success getting a long distance recovery?

Where is it, perhaps find an independent within 100km range and get it towed there? If its in Gippsland I can recommend hiline 4x4 in Traralgon

Upgrade you RACV cover if you need to, wait the waiting period, then call it in.

Seems like a pretty fair policy to me.
Whats the likely issue with the vehicle? If its something minor then its a quick fix and you drive it home. If its major ie busted transfer case or gearbox then its going to take more than 3 days to diagnose, get parts and repair and they'll freight it home.

My 03 TD5 broke down whilst towing a furniture trailer home to Melbourne from Bright. I spoke to the roadside assist guy who basically said as I was still 300 odd kilometers from home it was going to be easier for RACV to tow me home rather than to organise another car/accomodation. But he did say that he would have to tell 'head office' that the problem would take more than 3 days to repair. In the end RACV towed the car and trailer home and then towed the car another 15k's the next day to my mechanic.

In the end the problem was only the "turbo wastegate modulator" which took $40 and 5 minutes to replace.
