I'm in agreement with the majority here.I noticed the two of them with you when you picked up the seafood last Monday and they seemed well mannered well bought up kids.
Congrats, you and your Missus appear tobe doing a great job, keep it up they can only benefit from it in the future.

dont be convinced that they are angles.........they are still kids and push the rules, get into trouble and push my buttons from time to time and i have blown my fuse a few times which i dont get right all the time

for the life of me the kids getting themselves to and from school without fuss still amazes me....even when it is raining no complaints....

Teaching kids to be responsible, independant, how to stay safe and preparing them for life as an adult. Isn't that what parenting, good parenting is all about!

    Weeds,

    Sounds perfect to me.

I have a 13 yr daughter (just finished 1st yr of high school) and 10 yr old son.

13 yr old generally gets herself up and ready for school most mornings with no help or input from my wife or me.

10 yr old is slightly less independent but happy to be organised when there is something he wants to do in the morning.

From next year, Yr 5 he is changing schools, from local primary to one he has to travel too. He is fully aware that he will be responsible for getting ready and being organised.

Regards trips to shopping centre, my daughter found out the hard way that responsibility is not a given.

First trip to the movies with school friends she caught a train to the city and I arrange to pick her up a certain time. She was not ready and kept me waiting for nearly 45 mins because she was shopping or doing something else. It was a long while before she went on her next one, funnily enough on time when I pick her up.

I think over protective parents make for weak and overly dependent children.

Great work and so far looks like you have pretty much full support!!!

Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and yours.

    George

Are you a good parent?,all I see is a bunch of kids that have learnt to do things for themselves and not relying on getting mom to do everything for them, they'll take that with them their whole lives and will go far, employers like employee's that don't need supervisors holding their hands everyday. I can't see a problem with what you are doing. And re Chucaro's comment - the statistics show the reverse; society is a lot safer than it was fifty years ago, but problems tend to be reported much more fully, if not blown out of all proportion. Certainly there are a few cases such as the Morcombe one, but the fact that this case so dominated the news helps to show just how rare it is.

I dont have kids yet, but my parents philosophy in raising their 3 children was"the hammock of life". To have a hammock you need two solid supports and according to my parents, theyy were "privilige and responsibility". For every privilige there comes a responsibility. Us three kids all in our 30s have turned out just fine. IMO!!

At our youngest's 21st birthday party I said I was very proud of him because he was well on the way to making me redundant as a father. Got a few raised eyebrows from some parents present, but isn't the whole point of being a parent to get them to the point where they can figure it out for themselves?
