Some years ago I worked at installing car phone in a business workshop next door to a joinery shop. That joinery shop used to spray their finished product, the fumes then drifted next door to where I was working and nearly finished me as well. I could have ended up in the joinery shops product ---- coffins !

The product I am using is the KBS coatings system, similar to the POR 15, the chassis has already been sealed by an epoxy sealer. The top coat is a hardening UV protected coating. It releases isocyanates during spray painting, which other than damaging lungs can actually be fatal.

The factory is in an industrial area and the neighbouring businesses are all on holidays till wednesday with no local residents.

The chassis is 5.3 metres long with many nooks and crannies - a daunting task for brush painting, It takes 2 hours per side (top & bottom) to spray paint.

Having slept on the matter I would still rather acquire a propper air fed respirator. The issue of going to a spray painter is out as this re-build is costing a fortune. The caustic bath to remove the previous failed coating cost over $1,200 and last time I had 4 pre-prepared and undercoated wheel rims painted by a panel beater it cost $700 at that rate I would estimate painting a 5 metre chassis to be something in the order of $3,000 which is out.

Hi Diana,

if you want to DIY the job, I suggest speaking with The Air Doctor (The Air Doctor - Rental Equipment) about renting the BA equipment you need.

It wont be a cheap solution, but you will get exactly what you need to do the job, and really good advice. I have no affiliation with them, but have used their services before and they really know their stuff.

Sweet Jesus! At those prices, why not just galvanise the chassis???
