Where to get an air fed respirator in Sydney?

I was hoping to put a two pack top coat on my 6x6 defender chassis this Sunday but need to acquire an air fed respirator mask to do it.

Anyone know if they can be hired or purchased (borrowed or stolen) in Sydney tomorrow for use on Sunday?

I made one a couple of years ago by putting a airline through a cartridge and running of a compressor using regulator to reduce flow to just cause enough to maintain constant 'leaking'. Used a light plastic tube ex bunnings style, much easier to manage than airline like to the gun. Just used gaffs tape to keep it in place.
    Worked fine.

    Thanks Michael

I was thinking of using a Med-Ox bottle and nasal canula under the mask but I only have an 8L/min regulator/flow meter which is not enough to keep positive pressure and only gives about 50 min supply, but maybe I can adapt a medical O2 mask and tubing under my regular respirator and fit that to your compressor idea?

Woah! Air from a compressor is not breathing quality, you need to install a filter. They can be got, but are expensive.

    Cheers,

Whoa there Diana (as well as akelly's above) !

You are usually quite strong on OH&S, and rightly so.....

So instead of a jury-rigged setup , would it not be better (for the extra $$s) to take/send it to a professional and get it back done ?

On the other hand - and it's just a thought - is two pack the best treatment for a chassis (stone chips and all that) ?

Just a coupe of things to think about (which I'm sure you already have).

Anyhow - all the best for the New Year and thanks for your various advices through the year.

I agree two pack is mean **** and in the long run it can ruin your respiratory system big time and it doesn't take much. So if you are going ahead go and buy the best or get it done professionally.

Medical O2 mask is not designed to give 100% oxygen saturation - it's designed to mix with the ambient air, so it won't protect you from paint fumes. Also, the air from the compressor would need to be purified and dehumidified to bring it to a breathable quality - it's why you can't just fill your scuba tanks straight from the compressor.

Might be worth calling up a couple of paint shops and ass if they know where you can rent the appropriate gear for an afternoon.

Its only the chassis, you could brush it on, its two pack so will self level but would not be my choice for a chassis as its to hard and will chip, i would be using a por15 product with a brush. Be careful with two pack as if the neighbours smell it and complain to the police[happened to a friend of mine painting a motorbike] you can cop a very hefty fine for not using a booth. Having said that i painted my 110 panel at a time with it under the house when the neighbours are at work with just a pest control filter mask[shame on me!], done the same with my bikes.

    What's under the paint?

    Hi Diana

With the two pack paint, is that to be sprayed directly onto the bare metal chassis or do you coat it first with a under coat?

Some years ago I worked at installing car phone in a business workshop next door to a joinery shop. That joinery shop used to spray their finished product, the fumes then drifted next door to where I was working and nearly finished me as well. I could have ended up in the joinery shops product ---- coffins !

If you are really so keen to do it, hire a Scuba diving outfit, geez breathing air from a compressor, what brand oil do you use and how toxic is it, probably worse than the 2-pack, listen to the above advice, remember "nothing else matters when you can't breathe", Regards Frank.
