As long as laws are made by politicians (driven by faceless bureaucrats?) we will have lots of stupid ones...
But, when the interpretation of said stupidity, is 'assumed' by the same conflicted Interested Party and not challenged by the public and/or the judiciary... then we have a real problem. Or worse still, legislation is framed in such a way to make sensible remedies 'impossible'... (Dullbird's change of plasitc)
In this case Martin Luther King's comment regarding civil liberty etc bears some relevance.
“One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”
Taking the situation that dullbird found himself in... The Law permitted and endorsed his behaviour...then condemned it when he would have been better aquainted with our driving conditions...and therefore a SAFER driver.
How silly is the drafting and enforcement of a Law.... that prevents and penalises the observance of it's 'intent'
No wonder the Law and its agents are held in disrespect!

I see the point, but it's a bit of a stretch to compare civil rights legislation of the 1960's with not being allowed to drive a V8 until one is issued an unrestricted driver licence
Matt
Sorry, if you're so ignorant of you vehicle that you dont know whats powering it A, you should never have turned the key and B, if thats your attitude to driving you shouldn't have been permitted to sit for your learners permit.
lets look at it this way...
if she didnt know it was a V8 she obviously never opened the bonnet,
If she never opened the bonnet, hows she know what condition the engine, auto oil is in? hows she know what condition the radiator and coolant is in.
If thats not swaying you, how does she know its got enough brake fluid it in so its got a full compliment of brakes?
Even my son knows that you need to check things before you use them, Hes 6.
No sympathy, Ignorance is no excuse and shes not ignorant she knows she cant drive a V8 and its a basic drivers responsability to ensure that she knows what shes doing.
The government should have quite simply introduced a power to weight rule. Base it on factory specs and if you get nipped doing something outside the norm and the cop decides you're car might be over powered it gets dynod, if it passes (and lets have a +10% margin to allow for factory tolerances) you get a sorry for wasting your time, the car gets recorded as being suitable for L/P and it doesnt happen again. Fail you cop a fine, loss of license and get to pay for the dyno run.
basic rule, Dont draw the crabs and you might get away with a few mild mods be stupidly obvious hoon and you get what you deserve.
