    G'day Bob,

Just found some interesting stuff about Run Through the Jungle....

History The song was written by Creedence's lead singer, guitarist and songwriter, John Fogerty. It was included on their 1970 album Cosmo's Factory, the group's fifth album. The song's title and lyrics, as well as the year it was released (1970), have led many to assume that the song is about the Vietnam War. The fact that previous Creedence Clearwater Revival songs such as "Fortunate Son" were protests of the Vietnam War added to this belief.[1] However, according to the song's composer, that's not really the case. Fogerty, in a 1993 interview with the Los Angeles Times, said,

“ I think a lot of people thought that because of the times, but I was talking about America and the proliferation of guns, registered and otherwise. I'm a hunter and I'm not antigun, but I just thought that people were so gun-happy -- and there were so many guns uncontrolled that it really was dangerous, and it's even worse now. It's interesting that it has taken 20-odd years to get a movement on that position.

What Fogerty wrote as a war song was Fortunate Son....
The song was inspired by David Eisenhower, the grandson of President Dwight David Eisenhower who married Julie Nixon, the daughter of President Richard Nixon, in 1968.[5] John Fogerty told Rolling Stone: "Julie Nixon was hanging around with David Eisenhower, and you just had the feeling that none of these people were going to be involved with the war. In 1968, the majority of the country thought morale was great among the troops, and eighty percent of them were in favor of the war. But to some of us who were watching closely, we just knew we were headed for trouble." [6]

Okay I am citing Wikipedia - sometimes it is a great first source to gather references from or gain a basic understanding of something

PS not sure why I am getting a double quote for Wiki at Run Through the Jungle - I did try and fix it.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

During my deployment in 1970/71 with the RAN, we had the pleasure of mixing with ,in Subic Bay, either on the way to, or from Vietnam, US servicemen, from all services, and one thing sticks in my mind. One night in the acey doucey club, Subic Bay, some of us joined with some USMC reinforcements, and had a great time. The song I have here was sung with great gusto by all & sundry. We escorted them to Da Nang, then went on to our job of gunfire support, firing some 9,712 rounds of 5 inch , during our deployment . Before we met those men, it was just a job. Afterwards, it was personal. Bob`

By the way back in December 68 I was 6. A couple of years later I was with my uncle when he opened his draft letter on his birthday - sort of thing you don't forget when you are a kid!

Then Bruce Springsteen did a cover - no where near as good as the Starr version.

    Johnny Young's Contribution

Lastly from me tonight ..... Johnny Young, wrote the song "Smiley", a major hit for Ronnie Burns in 1969, the song was written about Normie Rowe.

BTW - had a rather fulfilling day today - NOT. I played with a certain government department starting with "C" after waiting for two hours; also put on a merry-go-round since mid-December by the custodians of my education and had a couple of circuits with them yet again today. Still trying to get things sorted out. Mood to work on the PhD today - zero. Tomorrow is a another day. AULRO good place to get the head together sometimes. Thanks. Don't worry I have enacted a mock-Latin aphorism Illegitimi non carborundum.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

    Fixed spelling.

Normie Rowe was included in the conscription call up falsely as the Army brass at the time wanted a celebrity because conscription was very unpopular. .A few years back one of the officers involved apologised to Normie.Another two well knowns were Bobby Fulton who during his two years of service played 5/8 for the Australian Rugby Union services team and Doug.Walters the Cricketer.Only one went overseas that was Normie Rowe. he was on APC's

And never forget that Simon Townsend, "Wonder World TV show" was a conscientious objector, refusing the draft.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
