Have to tie my dogs down

    G'day All,

The mozzies here are so bad now that I have had to tie myself and my cattle dog cross and my Border Collie cross dogs down with a rope so we don't get carried away. It is not just at night time; it is all day too. Plus the size of the sods - well it is one way to lose as bit of weight - have the blood sucked out of you .

My sympathies with other AULRO members who were flood effected - especially if the mozzies in your neck of the woods imitate the Bundaberg ones

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

    G'day Chucaro

Yes and the mozzies will be kept good company with the sand flies in those neck of the woods too. Trouble with the sand flies is that the are more adept at getting in through the insect screens.

Not only in that neck of the woods, when we moved from Sydney to Queensland in 1993 we stopped in the Finegmore Caraven Park to use it as a home base when we was looking for farms in the area. We stayed only one day there, the sand flies were terrible and the council used to use the smoke machine every morning. As a result we bought 27 acres in Childers!!

    G'day Chucaro,

    Whereabouts in Childers?

Isis Shire Council was the last shire council where I was a Parks Supervisor before I had to retrain. So I know the area fairly well.

The Childers district has some really nice and pretty places and is no where near as geographically challenged as Bundaberg. In case people are wondering Bundaberg is located on a flat coastal plain.

    Kind Regards

First I bought a farm in North Isis Rd about 5 km from town on the left hand side, then I sold it and built a converted American barn in CSR Dpto road just pass the railway line on the LHS.
Isis is one of the best small towns in Oz IMO

    North Bundaberg

    Hello All,

The news said last night that the people of North Bundaberg may not have their power and other essential services back on until 3 months. This includes having running water which makes it difficult for people to hose out the mud from their homes - if they still have one to clean out

Also with the burst natural gas line that runs through Bundaberg there is no natural gas for commercial operators as far down as Hervey Bay. Things like take away food outlets that have gas cookers and a big commercial laundry. The laundry owner said that he had temporarily converted the gas fired boiler for the steam plant to diesel - however it was costing him thousands of dollars each week to run the diesel.

There is a hell of a lot of heart ache happening in North Bundaberg and it will unfortunately be like that for a long time.

What beggars belief is that some people stole volunteer emergency worker's uniforms. The fear is that these people will use the uniforms to gain access to either donations or entry to people's places and then loot them. People have already been arrested for looting in places ranging from Bargara to out of North Bundaberg.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Lionel, that is terrible news specially for the old people that do not have the money to start all over again.
It will take few years for Bundy to recuperate from this

How is the situation in East Bundaberg? For sure that area have been affected in a bad way as well.

    Cheers

    G'day Chucaro,

Yes the situation in parts of East Bundaberg mirrors that of North Bundaberg. Also the same thing applies to where the tornadoes hit parts of Burnett Heads, Bargara and further down at Burrum Heads. I suppose the sheer scale of what has happened in North Bundaberg is the hard thing to grasp and it invariably overshadows what has happened elsewhere.

The whole economy of the Wide Bay Burnett district has been knocked for a six. Just after it struggled back to its feet after it was kicked in the nuts two years ago. There have been whole citrus orchards where there is not even a trace of having trees ever standing there. The force of the flood water was so strong it tore the trees out roots and all. What trees managed to survive are being knocked around because the floods took away all their irrigation systems including pumps and pipelines. This was going to be the first year that the orchardists were going to make a profit and they had a top class crop. The you have to add farm workers and goods and service providers who will not have income either. For graziers he numbers of stock loss has not even been estimated yet, or how many kilometres of fences have been knocked over or simply washed away.

People who did come through things okay, like in parts of Moore Park and districts who have jobs in Bundaberg have to drive from their homes to Gin Gin; beetle across to Childers; and then come into Bundaberg that way - then do the whole lot again to get home after work. So about a 2 hour trip each way.

I apologise if I have missed out any location or industry that has been affected by the floods locally to the Wide Bay Burnett and of course beyond. Places like Mundubbera and Eidsvold just do not get mentioned in the news - despite this they must have been affected by the floods.

Then again the people in other parts of Australia you can go ditto to the amount of damage just in their case the cause was bush fires instead of floods the damage status to life, emotions and property is the same no matter what the culprit was.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
