I may be wrong but the diffs are pretty strong..I believe the rear is a well known Salisbury diff..so are pretty good..axels are the weak link I think..espcially with a heavy right foot..
hey guys, new here.
i am looking at getting a new 4x4 and want something that falls into place with the 110 defenders. my only concern are the diffs being the weak point. i am looking at getting a truck with will last and take some rough tracks, heading up cape york this year so will be getting put through its paces on beach, water crossings, and some climbs as well. how weak are the diffs really? i know word of mouth can get a bit out of hand so thought i would ask the owners what sort of experiences they have had. also any other issues would be great!
cheers Jarrah

Defenders stopped having Sal rears around 2003.
There have been reports of issues with puma rear diffs and drivelines in general, however these issues could have been teething problems.
Do your homework, have a poke around here and you'll find all the info you could ever want![]()
since when have the diffs been a weak point? you have to do some very , very tough driving to expose diff weakness in Defender. Sounds like you been talking to the wrong people.
the puma diff weakness is caused by the driveline angles which is caused by the engine/gearbox tilt which upsets the propshaft angles, makes them vibrate and shake the snot out of the pinion bearings.

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I believe the problem stems from poor build/Assembly from the factory, dealers are replacing them with diffs rebuilt by Award Diffs in Sydney under warranty I believe.
