Not quite... Pajero was a few years ahead.. First released in 1982, 1983 saw the longer, 5 door model, and in 87 the 'full fruit' model (heated seats etc) came out.
The 3 litre SOHC V6 was in the '89 version, same year that the Disco 1 in 3-door was released. A year later Disco got 2 more doors... no more room as the wheelbase was still 100" vs the Paj's 106"

Isuzu brought out their Trooper in 1981, 5 doors on a 104" wheelbase

I still reckon that the Japs frightened the hide-bound hierachy at LR into belated action...
Jeep beat them all by thirty years.

They had a station wagon in the fifties, and the Wagoneer was a four door, American stylish conventional looking wagon released in 1963 with an optional auto 'box and optional swing arm front suspension, then an optional V8 in '65 or so.

Admittedly there weren't too many running around Orstralia over the years though.

The game changer in Australia was the GQ Patrol released in '88.

Coils all round (the front end design at least shamelessly stolen from the Rangie) in a long wheelbase, reasonably priced, strong and reliable HD 4x4 with a strong petrol or diesel straight six.

    Yes, you're correct, they did.

Not only but also, JEEP were the 4WD that the Land Rover was modelled on, and supposedly 'improved' in every area....

Can recall a few Wagoneers around here, the impression was....'Big'., and 'Capable'

Land Rover then, is the original (?) imitator... but unlike the Japs, can't seem to get the 'relibility' angle sorted out.
Or is it their Accounts Dept specifying cheap(er) components / materials ?

    - Just doing the post mortem on my Mazda Capella. 23 years young, 417,oookm...apart from the Top Radiator hose, the rest are originals. - Maybe the bottom hose, but can't recall doing it.

Care to try that with a D1 or D2 ? I would'nt. First thing I did on my 95 Classic at 137K, was change ALL hoses, - and not before time either.

I hope the unfortunate owner got a full insurance payout...
