Actually it's a striking way to see how much steel vs aluminium is in a Disco 1

Yup! steel roof and aluminuim bonnet the exact opposite to a RRC,but a lot of the rest of it are RRC as they were able to produce a lifestyle vehicle on an existing platform and bridge the price gap between the 110 and the late RRC,knowing that the P38a was about to enter production.
It also was the start of the oriental leisure vehicle market.

I recon that'd be a good start for a tough truck! - just needs new tyres... already has a bunch of weight reduction done! will be super sweet "rat 4x4"

Not quite... Pajero was a few years ahead.. First released in 1982, 1983 saw the longer, 5 door model, and in 87 the 'full fruit' model (heated seats etc) came out.
The 3 litre SOHC V6 was in the '89 version, same year that the Disco 1 in 3-door was released. A year later Disco got 2 more doors... no more room as the wheelbase was still 100" vs the Paj's 106"
Isuzu brought out their Trooper in 1981, 5 doors on a 104" wheelbase
I still reckon that the Japs frightened the hide-bound hierachy at LR into belated action...
