GRRRRRRRRR.
I rang a well known and very highly respected Diesel tuning and performance mob on the mainland for some advice today about a few tweaks on a Toyota 1HDT in a HDJ80.
Nothing too indepth, just some queries about increasing punger lift for a bit more of the 'diesel crack' and therefore some good off the line performance as it is an auto model, and was treated to a spiel about 'you shouldn't mess with it, take it to a diesel shop, you need special tools, do you know what this involves? Always use factory settings, etc etc etc.
even after I explained that the same process is achieved using 300 and 200 Tdi pumps, which I am well versed in, and the Toyota has a similar rotary pump, in fact a bosch copy albeit with 6 cylinders, I got the distinct impression that I was being talked down to in a most unpleasant manner.
I am not at all implying that I know everything, that would be stupid but I have researched that particular pump in depth before I rang, studied the pump manual, and have vast experience tuning the Bosch VP44 on the Tdi. Same operating principles etc. It would be nice to be at least listened to!!
If I treated customers that way ....
Sooo, anyone here tried a plunger lift increase from 1.35mm to 1.4mm with the Toyota 1HDT engine???? Any excessive rattle? did it actually help performance at all? That was all I wanted to know....

carton says your "specialist" has never played with the plunger settings and then real time tested it on real vehicles - perhaps he has always just been setting them to the spec ???
"bluster is often used first when a knowledge is tested"
In essence is plunger lift essentially the "timing" of a dieso?
And increasing lift essentially advancing timing
What harm will it do to push it up a little and drive it?

thats the sad state of the industry i guess, but as a polite and seemingly knowledgeable enquirer i was in my opinion deserving of at least some politeness.
i get lots of calls, almost on a daily basis about tweaking tdis, turbo mods and intercooling etc etc and never do i treat people in this manner. it was just plain rude.

hi steve, yes just a timing increase basically, achieved through the measurement/ adjustment of actual lift. not rocket science but as i said above a little bit of politeness isn't hard
i have had a similar response from a certain turbocharger sales and conversion centre, thinking outside the square is definately a no no for some...

Ummmm much like the time I took my my defer in to be checked on a dyno and the shop owner said there is no way they would get the boost up to 15psi as they only run Toyotas and Nissans only run 8-10.....
JC the thing that is great about plunger lift for setting timing is how accurate it is
I have never had a 300 run as well as this one that you talked me through the JC majik lift measurement!

Of course they've altered the timing on the Toyota, any diesel shop worth their salt has, but I'm guessing Eevo has hit the nail on the head.
I've copped the same thing to from time to time and reacted in the same way, but but it's only my ego reacting to a perceived slight.
Don't they know who I am
Of course some civility goes a long way, and not everyone is as nice as you JC (****ing in a pocket here)
I try and give everyone the benefit of the doubt these days, we don't know what sort of day or week they've had, although some people are just plain not nice.
Don't know about the Toyota, but I don't see why it wouldn't respond well to a slight advance in pump timing.
It seems that a lot of these engines from the nineties have the pump timing retarded a bit to reduce NOx.
Nissan TD42T's respond well to more advance, as well as the crack pressure being doubled on the injectors.
Increases atomisation, stops any chance of dribbling and I'm guessing shortens the injection period slightly so helps when you up the fuel delivery.
The other things these days to remember is liability, if he told you oh yeah just set it at X and you go do it and something goes wrong he was prob worried he would get an abusive phone call backso to avoid that he sticks with the line of stick with original factory settings.... Sounds to me like its a bit of that kind of situation any way.... With Mabey just a little down his nose type attitude
Well, many thanks to Goingbush, and Tank for pm'ing me some contacts for good diesel pump service centres, Today I rang Diesel tec in Lilydale, had a really good chat to Andrew, who was VERY helpful and really knows his stuff. (He even works on the odd Landy, Does fuel adjustments to Tdi's and chips Td5 too) What a change to speak to a like minded enthusiastic operatorMust drop in to see him if ever I get over that way. He even asked me if I wanted to send him some Dyno charts from the vehicle in question as he will be able to pinpoint all sorts of improvement areas for the 1HDT pump etc
soo, I will be getting some more info from the owner of the vehicle and getting back to him soon.
Today has been a good day!
