there are other extensive threads on this subject elsewhere on the forum... and this one reinforces the conclusion of the others: there's no cure...

however there may be mild relief from time to time. My wife has suffered from tinnitus for most of our 40+ yrs together Over the past 20 yrs she has been variously using the Sound Therapy tapes (carried a Walkman) and then later the upgraded You-beaut all-on-a-stick digital recordings (about the size of a flashdrive USB player) .Tinnitus, Tinnitus Treatment, Tomatis Therapy, Tinnitus Care - Sound Therapy

While her tinnitus is in the background almost all of the time, there are other times when it's better/worse than others. She definitely gets transient relief from the Sound Therapy product. I can tell because as soon as it gets "better" she stops listening to the music...

I have much sympathy for those who suffer from tinnitus..

Should I take up breeding Budgies?

I hate trying to listen to people talking to me in crowed places like party's, the Tinnitus make it near impossible for me to hear what is being said.

Its there at the moment, I also find it does come and go with changes in atmospheric pressure.

I happened to have a bad bout a couple years ago, while this was going on, the brother in law took me to one of his friends places to get some budgies ready for a show, after spending an hour amongst these delightful little characters, we came out of the aviary and my ears were quite - no ringing at all.

I guess the high pitched chirps multiplied by the number of birds ( about one hundred ) was what I needed to mask the Tinnitus, So the cure may be plenty of bird seed .

Thankfully mine is not constant, nor severe. It cuts in whenever it feels like it and then goes equally suddenly. But a bout can last a minute, a day or somewhere in between.

It started after a bout of severe vertigo, about 10 years ago, brought on by a viral infection. I've never worked anywhere where I would have been subjected to prolonged loud noises, have never been a fan of loud music and am careful to use hearing protection (most of the time ) when working with power tools.

It's like the noise you'd get if a mozzie could carry around a radio that not been tuned to a station.

Mostly i just ignore it, but like Arthur, I struggle to hear conversation in crowded places.

I only noticed mine when it appeared / suddenly intensified after taking Proscar for a few months... Sadly, I'm one of the 0.5% who get this. Better since I stopped/changed to something else, but it waxes and wanes.

For a few year I worked next to the departmental (printing factory) a/c intake vents... VLF may have done the damage. Plus tractor-driving in my youth... screaming diesel and no hearing protection or cab.

Try 'everything', You may find some therapy or Alternative Healing practice...or changed state of mind that works for you. Bear in mind that you are not seeking the perfect, patentable, Universal Cure the medical industry is after.... just whatever makes your life bearable.

Too many years working in supermarket refrigeration / air conditioning plant rooms. Ringing sounds like an electrical meter on continuity and the probes touching giving off that high pitched squealling noise!. Its constant and only varies by pitch and sound level. I hate going to noisey places trying to hear conversations too. People think you arent interested in what they are saying. Some joker here at Robina,on the gold coast says he can cure it with acupuncture. I havent tried it yet but am tempted to give it a go as he says he bulk bills, but he probably will try to push some sort of snake oil onto me as well.

No snake oil, but this is what he uses for the acupuncture:

I'm 42 and have had it since early child hood, I thought every one had it only to find out 15 years later it was not normal because my sister sudenly had buzzing in her ears and saw a specialist.!!!! quite is the killer, the quiter it is the louder the disco in my head. Strangely it does not bother me too much as its been my constant companion for 35 years.

I believe mine was caused by anti biotics or anti malarial mecidation as a kid. I now also have slight hearing loss at certain frequencies, interestingly corresponding with my wifes voice.,from shooting and machinery I 've been told.

I understand that the noise makers that you put next to your bed or under your pillow do work if you can guess the best frequecies to run them at? I think???

Any how, as said earlier, thanks for reminding me its there, now the disco is really loud so I'm going to read something else!

    Cheers
    Mal

Ok, thank you all very much. I have had it for about 20 years but for some reason it is getting louder & as a result been getting me down. So I thought I would put pen to paper so to speak, just in case someone had come across something helpful. Sorry to have brought it up as I know all too well that talking about it only makes it louder & more noticeable.
I have read that the UK & US governments have but put aside 1 billion dollars to try and find a cure as too many soldiers are suffering from the complaint. Maybe this is one of the only good things to come out of war.
    Thank again. Paul
