Thank you for the good advice. I am not in a hurry about this issue, as the priority #1 is having the defender registered. And then, move closer to the office/uni, so this aircon game will be delayed a bit. But, again, thanks a lot to you and the other guys for the good advice, including the "don't touch it, it can kill you", style, I appreciate that also.

I work with radios for a living... some are in the 10 kW region, so pretty high voltages there...

The compressor is isolated from the rest of the aircon (fans). BTW, I asked an electrical engineer at the office and he explained me that the capacitor is needed to provide a phase delay to the start winding, so it provides the right sense of rotation.

So bypassing is a bad idea. He suggested me to connect another capacitor in parallel (to increase the overall capacitance) with a relay, and have it connected for just a second during startup.

OK,so it has a RUN capacitor only,no start(as i guessed).I would get another run cap,same rating,or better still get it tested.Most multimeters can test a capaciter.if it is shot,replace it and see how you go.if it is OK,forget it.The compresser has probably been running short of gas and cooked itself,one of the main causes of compresser failures.

You can wire up a start relay,and start capacitor,and run capacitor to this type of PSC wired compressor,to give it a jolt to see if it will go.This is complicated,and i would not suggest anyone not qualified in the A/C,Refrig field to do it.Also most times it will just sieze up at a later date anyway.Been there,done that.

Hahaha, I was thinking no one would be old enough to know what an ANNIE was

Have one I inherited here in the cupboard but it's beena couple of years since it was used in anger

Funny isn't it, the post topic is all about finding out if the comp is dead or not, we used to run the ANNIE to check wether or not there was a winding or mechanical problem, I used to carry around three ANNIE's, these days what do we do? no second chances, "replace and be safe".... Can't say I'm any different but one thing I like to try to instill in the apprentices is not just accept that soemthing failed....find out why..... 99% of the time you will find the reason.... as to the topic in question, ring around the Commercial refrig companies not AC specific, ask if they have or use an ANNIE HERMETIC COMPRESSOR ANYLISER and if they answer yes or "geez mate not in ten years" then you probably have found someone that will give you good honest service
