For me personally, The answer is yes, but not in this country (the UK and Europe are pretty harsh when it comes to emissions).

However, have seen a car being pulled over and defected for being a bit smoky here in QLD. And it was only a little smoky, rather than terribly so.

Not sure if that fits in your definition of emissions though Pedro

Well here in the US (Colorado also Arizona, Calif, to mention a few ) we have a fairly strict 5 gas test. Currently down to about about 1,5 % for Nox.etc

Its a sliding E standard depending upon years of manufacture.
    Hybrids are exempt!

The test is done bi-annually for vehicle 1981 and younger.
A two gas annual test is for all others up to '81 and its a two gas HC and Co.

The test authorities can't VOR you directly, unless its commercial vehicle and the Highway Patrol (cops), but they will simply issue you a failure and you can't get the vehicle re-licensed without that beloved pass cert.

There is an exception of sorts the pass by road test. Rapid Screen pass. It automatically checks your car so that you don't have to present it to the test station. But equally if your vehicle is a polluter they will order by mail, you to take a re-test and revoke you road license validity if you don't obey. Which will cause a heap of problems if you get stopped by the cops.
    Air Care Colorado :: RapidScreen

Overall its a good thing and has over the years reduced Denver's high latitude brown cloud to negligible on most days.

Actually I Mis -said. I had a n 81 RRC in Saudi Arabia in 1985 and ADAC ( Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) was subcontracted to do yearly emission tests. I had to get new main jets and needles to pass.
Always seems funny to me that they did it in the middle of the desert and we don't do it here.

In NSW the defects are issued by the Police or RMS (RTA) and checks done by the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC), formerly the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

RMS, Police and DECC can also issue fines for suspected, or actual non-compliance.

....then you drive over a bridge in southern Sydney and look at the crap in the water that nothing gets done about, or get buzzed by some POS Harley Davidson with an aftermarket set of pipes.......it's a farce.

Of course we can't have an 'anything goes' policy, but soft targets seem to be the easiest ones to squash.

But in answer to the question - Yes. It was to get a Ford 289 engineered into a 1971 Ford Capri. Passed no worries.

Hmmmm, I wonder if this poll was borne from my post in the D2 section regarding cats.

Keen to see the results... So far it looks as though it's a non issue for the local Aussie drivers going about their normal business.

My ute now runs nicer with a new Edelbrock (thermoquad) carby on it. With the 650DP holley the fuel fumes coming out the bck would make your eyes water, no one ever cared regardless of whether it looked like this:

    Or This....

The same here in Colorado. We have the Bureau of Land Management which is a Fed organization. We have lots of trails for off roading to get up into the high country. BUT even off road the vehicles must be legally registered with current plates and E test.
So same here in the middle of the sand dunes area in So Col and a valid test is required!

Yep, I have had the "pleasure" every year (as these tests are compulsory here on an annual basis), once for every vehicle I have on the road. With a Diesel, decent preparation is the key. Worse are petrol engines with catalysts, especially when you have a faulty Lambda-sond...
