eBay data helps Centrelink catch welfare cheats - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Data from online trading site eBay has helped Centrelink catch out dozens of welfare recipients who are not declaring big profits from internet sales.
Centrelink compared its payment records with the activity of 15,000 people who are running profitable eBay businesses.
It identified 25 people who must repay more than $800,000 in payments they were not entitled to.
Minister for Human Services Kim Carr said about 100 cases warranted further investigation.
"About 25 debts have already been raised, with the average debt amount about $32,000 - roughly double the average debt for other types of investigations over the past two financial years," he said in a statement.

So what happens if they can't make the repayments?

If they are in employment then wages will be garnisheed if repayments are not forthcoming. If receiving an Allowance or Pension then 14% may be deducted from each payment until the debt is satisfied. If the debtor has any property then they may be required to sell this, or a caveat may be placed on the property to enforce the Commonwealth's interest in the property.Originally Posted by Landy Smurf

I do know of quite a few people who get centrelink who work quite a bit but just cash in hand.
I guess it will catch up with them eventually

I have tried to recuperate money lost in court from one person that was in the unemployment benefit.

Chuck, Commonwealth allowances and pensions are known as "inalienable payments". The payee must be able to access the full amount of the payment. Only the Commonwealth may attach any part of such payment. For example, if a payment is made into an overdrawn account, the bank may not keep any part of that payment. The receiver may withdraw the whole payment in one transaction. If only part is withdrawn then the balance may be kept and applied against the overdraft.That is applicable to those that cheat big brother but not for members of the public that were victims of fraud.

Not much chance of that. The lily-livered DPP is loath to prosecute any but lay down miseres. I was heartily fed up with forwarding prosecutable overpayments to DPP for prosecution and having the files returned without action. Of the ones that do get to court, very few receive gaol time unless they have considerable past form. The magistrates need a kick in the bum to wake them up and get them to properly sentence people who have willingly, knowingly, ripped off the Australian people for many thousands over long periods and would have kept on doing so if not for the efforts of a very few, understaffed, underappreciated DSS Review Teams. A helping of porridge should be mandatory for large sums or repeat offences.
